Is Tutoring the Future of Education in Botswana?

Every year, thousands of students in Botswana fail critical exams. At the same time, many young graduates remain unemployed. Lion Tutoring has emerged as a bridge between these two challenges, offering learners extra academic support while creating work opportunities for qualified tutors.

In the latest episode of The Think Set, host Kaelo Sabone speaks with Tobo Khatola, the founder and CEO of Lion Tutoring. The conversation explores how tutoring is reshaping Botswana’s education landscape, why technology and AI are central to their model, and how parents can play a stronger role in motivating their children.

Khatola explains how Lion Tutoring recruits teachers and graduates, vets them carefully, and then deploys them through a digital platform that works much like Uber. Tutors set their own schedules, parents track progress through monthly reports, and students gain personalised attention that schools often cannot provide.

The discussion also highlights the deeper issues within Botswana’s education system. From outdated curricula to lack of outcome-based learning, many students are left behind. Tutoring, Khatola argues, is not only about passing exams but also about preparing young people for the skills that matter in the future, including coding, AI, and entrepreneurship.

This episode is a must-watch for parents, educators, policymakers, and young people seeking alternatives in a tough job market.

Botswana is not too small to grow. It is too closed to move. Diversity is not a threat. It is a strength.

The world’s most competitive economies are not homogenous. Dubai, Singapore, South Africa. They are built on variety, movement, and access.

We are scared to open up. We think foreigners will take everything. But most of the undocumented are already here. Regulations are tight for the wrong people. The investors struggle. The bad actors find loopholes.

We need to stop protecting systems and start building opportunity. We need a border policy that protects our interest and opens our doors.

You don’t build a strong country by blocking talent. You build it by attracting it.
