Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remains one of Botswana’s most pressing social challenges, threatening the nation’s moral fabric and collective security. According to the latest State of the Nation Address, 14,020 GBV cases were recorded in 2024, with over 4,400 involving children under the age of 18. Beyond these numbers lie broken families, deep trauma, and a persistent call for justice. In response, the government has announced a review of the National Strategy Towards Ending GBV, alongside plans to establish One-Stop Service Centres for survivors and to adopt a stronger human rights, based approach in addressing emerging trends. This discussion explores how far Botswana has come in the fight against GBV, and what more must be done to protect the most vulnerable members of society.

In his 2025 State of the Nation Address, President Advocate Duma Boko placed young people at the center of Botswana’s development agenda, describing them as “our most precious resource, more valuable than any physical asset.” He noted that youth unemployment remains high at about 38.2% and announced the launch of the Presidential Youth Empowerment Campaign. The initiative will begin with a baseline study to identify 1,000 promising young candidates and will develop tools such as the Botswana Digital Employability Index and a National Tracer Registry. The programme is designed to scale up to 10,000 participants over time, aiming to connect young people with training, entrepreneurship, and job opportunities. We discuss the key takeaways and opportunities presented by this initiative, and what it could mean for the future of Botswana youth:
