What can hyena droppings tell us about the African wilderness? Quite a lot, it turns out.

Student Professional Guide Ontlametse Botshololeng of Career Dreams Centre took a visiting Botswana French Embassy official on a fascinating journey through nature, science, and folklore.

Using hyena s**t as a starting point, Ontlametse explained how wildlife guides interpret animal behavior, feeding habits, and ecosystem health from signs left behind in the bush.

He then shared one of Africa's most enduring legends connecting the iconic baobab tree and the laughing hyena. According to folklore, the baobab was once a proud tree that boasted of its beauty until the gods punished it by uprooting and replanting it upside down, leaving its roots seemingly reaching into the sky.

In some versions of the tale, it was the hyena that mistakenly planted the tree upside down. Finding the sight hilariously amusing, the hyena laughed uncontrollablyโ€”and legend has it that this is how the animal earned its famous "laugh."

From wildlife tracking to cultural storytelling, Ontlametse's presentation showcased the unique blend of ecological knowledge and African heritage that professional guides bring to every interpretation experience.

Saleshando Unveils Vision to Transform Maun Into a Destination

For years, Maun has been seen as just a gateway to the Okavango Delta โ€” a stopover rather than a destination. But that narrative can change.

Maun North MP Dumelang Saleshando has announced plans to revitalise the airport precinct, making the area more attractive for visitors, encouraging longer stays, and creating more opportunities for local businesses to benefit directly from tourism spending.

The project aligns with broader Maun development plans aimed at growing the village into more than just a transit point but, a tourism town.

Chobe Holdings Limited and Natural Selection Join UNICEF CEO Council for Early Childhood Development Leadership

Chobe Holdings Limited, represented by Group Managing Director MC Odumetse, and Natural Selection, represented by Director Tebogo Boalotswe, have been welcomed as new members of the UNICEF CEO Council.

This follows the two companies impactful work in early childhood development (ECD) within Botswanaโ€™s tourism sector.

The announcement was made during an Early Childhood Investment Roundtable, which brought together government, private sector leaders, development partners, and civil society to strengthen commitments to childrenโ€™s well-being.

The roundtable highlighted a collective BWP 13 million investment in support of children, with a renewed call for stronger partnerships to expand ECD access, improve foundational learning, and support the transition from learning to earning.

Chobe Holdings and Natural Selection were recognized for their contribution to expanding ECD centres, supporting playgroups, strengthening teacher support, and integrating conservation education into community learning initiatives. Their work also includes vocational scholarships and efforts to reach marginalized communities, demonstrating how tourism can drive both conservation and social impact.

UNICEF and partners emphasized that only 43% of children aged 0โ€“6 currently have access to ECD services, with access remaining unequal and learning poverty still high. The roundtable called for greater private sector involvement, innovative financing, and earlier investment in children, beginning from birth.

The inclusion of Chobe Holdings and Natural Selection in the UNICEF CEO Council reflects growing recognition of the tourism sectorโ€™s role in building sustainable, community-based solutions for children. It also reinforces the importance of cross-sector collaboration in ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
