Your Key to a Better Future
In today’s world of rising living costs, economic uncertainty, and growing opportunities, saving money has never been more important. For Batswana, the principle of go boloka (to save) is deeply rooted in the culture. However, as Botswana’s financial landscape evolves, so must our methods of managing money. While informal savings remain familiar and trusted, they are no longer sufficient to meet the demands of the modern economy. To secure their future, support their families, and contribute to national development, individuals must recognize that saving money in a formal bank account is now essential.

One key benefit of saving in a bank is security. Unlike cash stored at home, which is vulnerable to theft, damage, or loss, funds in a licensed bank are protected by Botswana's banking regulations. This creates a stable and trustworthy environment for depositors. In times of emergencies or economic challenges, banked money is safer and more accessible.

Additionally, saving in a bank allows individuals to take advantage of compound interest. Unlike idle cash, money in a bank grows over time as interest is earned on both the initial deposit and the accumulated interest. This compounding effect can turn small, regular savings into significant resources for unexpected expenses, major purchases, or retirement.

Finally, engaging with the banking system helps individuals establish a financial identity. In modern Botswana, access to credit for business loans, home purchases, or school fees heavily relies on a person’s financial history. Banks play a crucial role in documenting this history, offering individuals greater financial opportunities.

The Gambling Authority has earned the BOS ISO 9001:2015 certification, setting a new standard for excellence in public sector regulation.
In a major step toward regulatory excellence and institutional growth, the Gambling Authority has received the BOS ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems Certification from the Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS). The award was presented at a notable ceremony held at the Gambling Authority's Head Office in Gaborone, with the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship, Professor Goemeone Mogomotsi, officiating. In his keynote speech, Professor Mogomotsi described the certification as “a strategic milestone and a testament to Botswana’s dedication to service excellence, efficiency, and global standards.”
He praised the Gambling Authority for achieving the certification on its first attempt, describing it as “a profound cultural shift that elevates Botswana’s reputation as a trusted and capable regulatory environment.”
“The BOS ISO 9001:2015 standard is more than just a plaque on the wall; it represents a commitment to leadership, customer focus, and continuous improvement. Certification marks the beginning of a lifelong journey of quality,” he said.

Gambling Authority Board Chairman, Mr. Marvin Thokozani Torto, opened the event with a warm welcome, highlighting the organisation’s journey toward this remarkable achievement. “Today, we celebrate not just a certificate but a transformation. This milestone confirms that our internal systems, from licensing to compliance and responsible gambling, meet internationally recognised best practices,” said Mr. Torto.

“Our strategy extends beyond regulation; it is developmental. Through initiatives like Limited Payout Machines (LPMs) and betting operations we aim to create over 2,000 permanent jobs and drive Botswana’s economic diversification,” he added.

The event also honoured Mr. Emolemo Peter Kesitilwe, the Gambling Authority CEO, for his recent appointment as an Executive Member of the African Organisation for the Harmonisation of Gambling Standards (ARSO), a key intergovernmental body under the African Union focused on standardisation and trade integration. “This appointment reflects Botswana’s growing influence in regional regulatory conversations,” said Mr. Mogomotsi.

“It is a proud moment for Botswana,” added Mr. Torto, “to see one of our own shaping continental frameworks for responsible gambling and investor confidence.”

Mr. Botsile Kebapetse, Managing Director of BOBS, also expressed his pride, saying, “It is an honor to officially hand over the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System Certificate to the Gambling Authority. As you know, the Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS) is tasked with providing Quality Infrastructure (QI) services in Botswana, which include standardization, metrology, and conformity.”
