FMD UPDATE: Seven new cases confirmed as response intensifies in Good Hope District

Botswana’s response to the Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak continues to intensify, with the Department of Veterinary Services confirming seven new cases in the Good Hope District.

According to Acting Minister of Lands and Agriculture Dr Edwin Dikoloti:

• Roadblocks are being introduced to restrict movement and help contain transmission.
• The outbreak has now been recorded in multiple areas in the southern part of the country, including Ramatlabama, Matasalalo, Papatlo, Bethel, Phihetswane and Bruwer’s feedlot in Hildavale.
• Farmers and communities are being urged to work closely with veterinary officials and monitor the health of their animals.
• The ministry will also convene an FMD pitso to further engage the community on the disease and the measures being taken.

Officials say cooperation remains critical if the outbreak is to be contained.

FMD UPDATE: Summary from the latest Ministry of Lands and Agriculture briefing

Botswana has intensified its response to the Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak in the Goodhope District, with authorities confirming that cases have spread beyond Ramatlabama to surrounding areas including Papatlo, Papame and Mogobane.

According to Acting Minister of Lands and Agriculture Dr. Edwin Dikoloti:

• Government has allocated P97 million towards the response, with around P30 million already used for surveillance, vaccination and bio-security interventions.
• Movement control measures remain in place as surveillance and vaccination efforts continue.
• Government security agencies are investigating an email sent to the Botswana Meat Commission threatening to spread Foot and Mouth Disease if the sender was not paid USD500,000.
• The outbreak has affected Botswana Meat Commission operations and disrupted exports to the European Union market.
• Botswana is exploring other market opportunities, including the DRC, Ghana and Angola.

Members of the public are urged to comply with control measures, avoid unauthorised livestock movement, and report any suspected cases to veterinary offices.
