At the Ministry of Education, our team strengthened health and safety protocols through meticulous screening and records management, enhancing organizational welfare. My leadership in safety education initiatives directly contributed to these improvements. In my previous role at the Ministry of Health, we navigated the complexities of COVID testing, data collection, and specimen management. Curren

tly, at Botho University, I am deepening my expertise in health information management to further elevate healthcare practices with data-driven solutions and compassionate care.

โ€œIf life is a game, then books are cheat codes.โ€

Think about it.

Most people try to figure life out only through personal experience โ€” making mistakes, losing time, learning everything the hard way. But books give you access to lessons that took other people decades of struggle, failure, discovery, and success to learn.

A single book can save you 10 years of confusion.

Books teach you how to think before life forces you to learn through pain. They expose you to ideas, strategies, wisdom, and perspectives you may never encounter in your immediate environment.

When you read:
โ€ข You borrow the mindset of great thinkers.
โ€ข You gain the experience of people youโ€™ve never met.
โ€ข You learn from failures without having to suffer every failure yourself.
โ€ข You begin to see opportunities others overlook.

A farmer who reads farms differently.
A leader who reads leads differently.
An entrepreneur who reads builds differently.
A young person who reads dreams differently.

Books are not just paper and ink.
They are maps.
They are mentors.
They are weapons.
They are seeds that grow into transformation.

The truth is, life becomes easier when your mind becomes wiser.

While others are waiting for luck, readers are quietly upgrading their thinking.

Never underestimate what consistent reading can do to your future. One idea from one book can change your finances, your relationships, your career, your confidence, or your entire direction in life.

Read widely.
Read deeply.
Read consistently.

Because in the game of life, knowledge is one of the greatest advantages anyone can possess.

Nobody teaches you this clearly in school.

So I made this for you. ๐Ÿง

Here's the cheat sheet I wish I had in year one of my epi training:

โœ… The 4 numbers that actually matter in outbreak investigations
โœ… The 6 mistakes almost every epi student makes (and how to fix them)
โœ… The 6 core formulas โ€” saved, formatted, ready to use
โœ… The 11 biases you MUST know by name before you graduate

๐Ÿ”ข THE NUMBERS THAT MATTER

๐Ÿ“Œ AR% โ€” Attack Rate
Not actually a "rate." It's a risk. Don't let anyone hear you say otherwise.

๐Ÿ“Œ CFR โ€” Case Fatality Ratio
Depends entirely on how well you count your cases. Garbage numerator = garbage CFR.

๐Ÿ“Œ Rโ‚€ โ€” Basic Reproduction Number
Not a fixed property of a pathogen. Context changes everything.

๐Ÿ“Œ PAF โ€” Population Attributable Fraction
The most underused number in public health advocacy. Learn it. Use it.

โŒ MISTAKES TO STOP MAKING TODAY

โŒ Confusing incidence rate with incidence risk โ€” different denominators. One uses person-time. One doesn't.
โŒ Interpreting a p-value as "the probability your hypothesis is true." It's not. It never was.
โŒ Reporting OR as RR when the disease isn't rare. Your odds ratio is lying to you.

โœ… Always ask: WHO is the denominator?
โœ… Check for effect modification BEFORE confounding. Order matters.
โœ… When in doubt โ€” draw the DAG. Directed Acyclic Graphs save careers.

๐Ÿ”ฌ CORE FORMULAS โ€” SAVE THIS

Sensitivity = TP รท (TP + FN) โ†’ How well the test finds true cases
Specificity = TN รท (TN + FP) โ†’ How well it rules out non-cases
Relative Risk = Re รท Ru โ†’ Cohort studies only. Not case-control.
Odds Ratio = (ad) รท (bc) โ†’ Case-control. Rare disease assumption applies.
Prevalence = Cases รท Population ร— 100,000 โ†’ Cross-sectional. Point in time.
NNT = 1 รท ARR โ†’ Every intervention needs this number.

โšก BIASES YOU MUST KNOW BY NAME

The hardest part of epidemiology isn't the math.

It's knowing WHICH measure to use, WHEN โ€” and why every other choice would be wrong.

๐Ÿ’พ Save this post so you don't lose it.
๐Ÿค Tag a classmate who needs it right now.
๐Ÿ“ข Share it to your epi or public health group.

Because good surveillance starts with good epidemiologists ...and good epidemiologists start with solid fundamentals.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Can Your Smartphone Predict the Next Outbreak?

A growing field in modern public health believes the answer may increasingly be: yes.

Welcome to the world of:

โžก๏ธ Digital Epidemiology.

For decades, epidemiology relied mainly on hospitals, laboratories, and official reporting systems to detect outbreaks.

But today, billions of people generate digital signals every second through:
๐Ÿ“ฑ Smartphones
๐ŸŒ Internet searches
๐Ÿ“ Mobility data
๐Ÿ’ฌ Social media activity
โŒš Wearable devices
๐Ÿ›’ Pharmacy purchases

These digital traces are now becoming valuable tools for public health surveillance.

๐Ÿ”ฌ What is digital epidemiology?

Digital epidemiology uses data generated outside traditional healthcare systems to monitor, detect, and sometimes predict disease activity in real time.

Instead of waiting days or weeks for official reports, epidemiologists can analyze digital patterns that may signal emerging health threats earlier.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Examples include:

๐Ÿ”Ž Sudden increases in online searches for symptoms
๐Ÿ“ Population movement patterns during outbreaks
๐Ÿ’ฌ Social media discussions about illness
๐Ÿ’Š Increased purchases of fever or cough medications
โŒš Wearable devices detecting abnormal physiological trends

During the COVID-19 pandemic, digital data helped researchers monitor:
โœ… Population mobility
โœ… Adherence to public health measures
โœ… Symptom trends
โœ… Vaccine sentiment
โœ… Early outbreak signals

๐ŸŒ Why is this important?

Traditional surveillance often detects outbreaks after transmission is already established.

Digital epidemiology aims to shorten that delay.

It can provide:
โšก Faster situational awareness
โšก Early warning signals
โšก Real-time behavioral insights
โšก Better epidemic forecasting
โšก More adaptive public health responses

But there are important concerns:

โš ๏ธ Privacy and ethical issues
โš ๏ธ Data quality and misinformation
โš ๏ธ Unequal digital access between populations
โš ๏ธ Algorithmic bias
โš ๏ธ Risk of false signals

Digital data should therefore complement โ€” not replace

As Christians, we must not fear the signs of the times. Despite the tragedies we see on TV, we must remember all that God has done for us. We must pray and believe that He will protect us. We must have faith, for without it, we cannot please God. Let us not forget the promises of God and the stories of His deliverance. These are the times that try our faith, but God will bless us all.

Nature is our strongest ally, and protecting it is essential for our shared future. ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒฟ

Biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented rate, with ecosystems facing growing pressures from climate change, pollution, overexploitation, invasive species and urbanisation. Yet these living systems sustain all life on Earth.

Across its sites, and , UNESCO works with communities, scientists, Indigenous Peoples and partners to protect biodiversity, restore ecosystems and strengthen the resilience of both nature and people.

This is a call to act: to rethink our relationship with nature and help restore balance for a more sustainable world.
