In Kasane, Botswana, and Zambia today, five years after the Kazungula Bridge opened, the two countries formalized a landmark step in regional cooperation by signing an agreement to create the Kazungula Bridge Authority.

πŸ“ŒThe governments will fund both the bridge’s construction and its ongoing operations.
πŸ“ŒThe Kazungula Bridge Authority will be hosted on the Botswana side, while Zambia will appoint the Executive Director.
πŸ“ŒThe Authority is tasked with ensuring the bridge’s sustainable operation, long-term maintenance, and continued growth of this critical trade link in Africa.

Representing Botswana was Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Noah Salakae. Signing on behalf of Zambia was Hon. Eng. Charles Lubasi Milupi, Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development.

Tomorrow, President Duma Boko of Botswana and President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia will jointly officiate the Authority’s launch at Kazungula.

The Botswana Teaching Professionals Council (BOTEPCO) has called on educators nationwide to formalize their professional status by registering and securing licenses in line with the council’s statutory mandate.
Registrar Dr Raphael Dingalo confirmed that the council is operating within a structured transition period designed to institutionalize higher professional standards across the teaching fraternity. He clarified that the objective of registration is quality assurance and sectoral reformβ€”not punitive enforcement.
β€œWe are overseeing a process of change and encouraging practitioners to recognise the value embedded in professional regulation,” he stated.
Dr Dingalo further indicated that, effective next year, registration with BOTEPCO will become compulsory for all practicing teachers. Non-compliance will attract legal consequences.
An individual teaching without valid registration risks a P5,000 fine, a custodial sentence of up to three years, or both. Institutions found employing unregistered educators may face a P15,000 penalty or imprisonment of up to 12 months.
The announcement was made during a media briefing that also highlighted preparations for the upcoming Africa Federation of Teaching Regulatory Authorities conference and roundtable, scheduled for 5–8 May 2026.

Government is accelerating plans to extend the national electricity network to rural and hard-to-reach communities, including settlements situated within protected wildlife zones.
Addressing Parliament, Energy Minister Bogolo Kenewendo explained that electrification efforts in parts of Okavango have faced delays due to the requirement for special environmental clearances before installing power infrastructure.
She was responding to concerns raised by Okavango West MP Kenny Kapinga, noting that consultations with the relevant authorities have been concluded and the necessary approvals are expected shortly.
Kenewendo further stated that Tsodilo village was successfully connected to the national grid in November, while the Chukumuchu project has progressed to the tender stage.

The Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education, through its Out of School Education and Training Unit (OSET), has officially launched Project Bula Buka, a transformative initiative designed for out-of-school Junior Certificate (JC) leavers.

This comprehensive program aims to bridge the educational gap by providing critical access to learning, practical skills training, and character development. Project Bula Buka is built on the principle of creating multiple pathways, ensuring every participant can progress towards further education, vocational expertise, or sustainable employment.

β€œOur mission is to ensure no young person is left behind,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry. β€œProject Bula Buka is more than a second chance; it is a dedicated pathway to empowerment. We are building not just skills, but also the resilience and character needed for our youth to thrive and contribute meaningfully to our society.”

The project’s key offerings include:

Β· Foundational Education: Bridging academic gaps for future opportunities.
Β· Skills Training: Practical, market-relevant vocational training.
Β· Character Building: Initiatives focused on leadership, citizenship, and personal development.
Β· Multiple Pathways: Clear routes for graduates to re-enter formal education, enter apprenticeships, or launch entrepreneurial ventures.

Project Bula Buka represents a significant investment in Botswana’s human capital and aligns with national goals for inclusive development and youth empowerment.

Out-of-school youth who have completed their JC are encouraged to seize this opportunity. For detailed information, eligibility criteria, and the application process, please visit the official portal: http://eimc.co.bw/bula-buka/

Government has approved a P97 million budget aimed at containing and managing the ongoing Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak, Vice President Mr. Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe has announced.
Speaking at a kgotla meeting held at Jackalas No.1 this morning, the Vice President said the funds will be directed towards immediate intervention measures. These include the procurement and rollout of vaccines, repair and maintenance of veterinary fences, and operational support for agencies involved in disease control efforts.
Mr. Gaolathe highlighted that the multi-sectoral response brings together the Police Service, Botswana Defence Force, Local Government structures, and local communities to ensure effective containment and monitoring of the disease.
Meanwhile, a representative of the Botswana National Beef Producers Union reaffirmed the union’s commitment to working closely with government in combating FMD. The union has secured Soda Ash from Botswana Ash for use in disease control, engaged a private company to assist with nationwide transportation of the material, and established a Disease Control Fund to allow public contributions towards mitigation efforts.
The coordinated approach is expected to strengthen biosecurity measures and protect the livestock industry, which remains a key pillar of the national economy.

The Botswana Council of Non-Governmental Organisations (BOCONGO) will participate in the CSOs Mentorship and Capacity Building Programme set for the 7th of February 2026 as a key sector partner, endorsing the initiative and contributing its expertise in civil society coordination, organisational strengthening, and sector development.

As part of the programme, the BOCONGO Director will share insights on the importance of affiliations and networks at local, regional, and international levels. Emphasis will be placed on standards, collective representation, and structured membership, which are critical for start-up and emerging civil society organisations seeking credibility, partnerships, and increased visibility within the development ecosystem.

BOCONGO’s contribution will enable participating organisations to better appreciate the value of collaboration platforms and alignment with national and regional civil society frameworks. This understanding is essential for strengthening governance systems, enhancing accountability, and promoting sustainable organisational growth.

The organisation’s involvement reinforces the programme’s objective of building well-governed, networked, and sustainable CSOs that can effectively engage with funders, government, and development partners while amplifying community voices.

BOCONGO joins a strong network of partners supporting the programme, including UNFPA Botswana, Mbewe Legal Practice, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Botswana, Botswana Gender Based Violence Prevention & Support Centre, HOPE worldwide Botswana, Circle Point, Botswana National Youth Council (BNYC), Youth of Hope Safe Haven Organisation, Boyson Boipelo Mokone, Botswana Network of AIDS Service Organisations (BONASO), and Jhpiego Botswana.

Together, these partners bring diverse expertise that will enrich the mentorship and capacity-building experience for participating civil society organisations.

Teachers’ unions have welcomed the improved performance in the 2025 Junior Certificate (JC) Examinations, while raising concerns over persistent inequalities within Botswana’s education system.

The Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU) has noted an increase in the number of candidates who attained Merit, A and B grades compared to 2024. Speaking to Duma FM News, BOSETU Secretary General Tobokani Rari commended both teachers and learners for the improved results, achieved despite challenging working conditions in many schools.

However, Rari cautioned that the gains are largely concentrated in urban and peri-urban schools, particularly those serving learners from middle- and high-income families. He said this trend exposes a long-standing rural–urban divide, with learners in rural and disadvantaged communities continuing to lag behind due to limited resources and unequal access to quality education.

Meanwhile, the Botswana Teachers Union (BTU) is expected to add its voice to the discussion. BTU Deputy Secretary General Comrade Othusitse Kgaswane is scheduled to appear on DUMA FM today at 20:15hrs, where he will share the Union’s views on the 2026 Junior Certificate Examinations (JCE) results.

The interview is expected to address key issues affecting teachers and learners, as well as the role of advocacy and protection in improving education outcomes.

Teachers’ unions have reiterated calls for targeted interventions to close the performance gap, stressing that sustainable improvement in examination results must benefit learners across all regions and socio-economic backgrounds.

The Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Honourable Nono Mokoka-Kgafela, has announced that learners who do not secure placement into senior secondary schools will be accommodated under Project Bula Buka, a government initiative aimed at providing alternative education and skills development pathways.

Through the programme, affected learners will be supported with placement into vocational and skills training institutions, allowing them to continue their education through practical and career-oriented learning. Project Bula Buka was launched in December last year to equip learners with entrepreneurial, vocational, and life skills, particularly those unable to progress to higher academic levels.

The initiative underscores government’s commitment to inclusive education and youth empowerment by recognising diverse abilities and reducing the risk of unemployment among school leavers. By promoting skills-based education, Project Bula Buka prepares learners for self-reliance and meaningful participation in the economy.

Project Bula Buka is positioned as a viable alternative pathway, ensuring that no learner is left behind within Botswana’s education system.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Stephen Modise, has officially declared Sir Ketumile Masire Hospital a public health facility with immediate effect.
In a national address last night, Dr. Modise announced that the hospital will now accept walk-in patients, allowing members of the public to access medical services at any time.
The decision marks a reversal of a policy under the previous administration, which had designated the facility to operate as a private hospital.
Dr. Modise further assured the nation that government is taking decisive steps to address the ongoing shortage of medicines. He noted that consignments of essential drugs expected to arrive next week are anticipated to significantly improve stock levels across public health facilities nationwide.
