BOMU BLASTS ROYAL ARIA OVER P50 PER HEAD DEMAND

The Botswana Musicians Union (BOMU) has accused Royal Aria Stadium owners of imposing excessive costs on Sunbet Simply Piano, following an alleged demand for an additional P50 per attendee.

In a statement issued on September 24, BOMU backed the event’s relocation to Fairgrounds Outdoor Arena, describing the move as a principled stand to protect Botswana’s creative industry.

The union said it had received complaints from creatives who allegedly suffered financial losses in dealings with the stadium owners.

BOMU Secretary General Rasina Winfred Rasina said the union would follow up on the matter and related complaints.

GOVT, MAIKARABELO SIGN TEXTILE SKILLS DEAL

The Ministry of Higher Education has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Maikarabelo Movement to strengthen textile skills development and link training to employment and enterprise opportunities.

The agreement was signed today at the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) Headquarters by Maikarabelo founder Callistus Phologolo and the Ministry of Higher Education Acting Permanent Secretary, Mr. Mmoloki Raletobana.

The partnership will use selected Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) facilities to deliver practical, industry-oriented textile training.

It will also support enterprise development, strengthen training infrastructure, and provide TVET lecturers with greater exposure to industry practices.

The collaboration further creates opportunities for knowledge transfer from experienced textile practitioners and Lesotho’s textile manufacturing sector, as Botswana seeks to strengthen its textile and apparel value chain.

The Ministry says the agreement demonstrates the importance of partnerships between government, industry and other stakeholders in turning skills development into sustainable economic opportunities for Batswana.

On the ongoing launch of the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Strategic Implementation Plan under the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs, Socio-Demographic Statistician Director Tapologo Baakile said integrating the Business Management Information System and the courts is crucial in improving the exchange of information among institutions.
He said automating data exchange can help reduce duplication of information while ensuring compliance with data protection laws.
He noted that different entities and departments often collect information separately, resulting in data that may not overlap or align.
Baakile stated that modern users expect accurate and consistent information without duplication or conflicting figures.
He said establishing interfaces between the different data systems will help address these challenges and improve the reliability of information.
He further highlighted the importance of identity management, following concerns raised by the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs Permanent Secretary earlier in the event.

TONOTA FARMERS ARMED AGAINST CROP PESTS

Temo Boswa Arable Association in Tonota East has received 89 knapsack sprayers from Agrizor Syngenta to help farmers control pests and protect their crops.

Agrizor Business Development Manager Kgosi Seoke says the donation fulfills a commitment made during the Tonota East Harvest Day earlier this year. Farmers will also be trained on the proper use and calibration of the sprayers.

Agrizor also showcased seed varieties designed to withstand drought and severe weather conditions.

Association chairperson Nchenje Mogapi cautioned farmers to use the sprayers only for pesticides, warning that incorrect substances could scorch and destroy crops.

Tonota District Agricultural Coordinator Keneilwe Bagidi urged farmers to guard against pests and make use of soil-testing services and the Lemang Dijo programme.

Former Tonota MP Pono Moatlhodi urged livestock farmers to control their animals to prevent crop damage.

MAELE: CERTIFICATES ALONE WON’T CREATE JOBS

Higher Education Minister Prince Maele says Botswana must move beyond training and focus on turning skills into businesses, production, and jobs.

Speaking at the signing of the Maikarabelo National Textile Skills Development partnership, Maele said the programme targeting 100 textile enterprises must deliver measurable economic results.

He says TVET institutions must work closely with industry to expose students and lecturers to modern technology, machinery, and production processes.

Maele also urged young people to look beyond waiting for formal employment and use their skills to build enterprises and create opportunities.

The Minister says the success of the programme will be measured by the businesses that grow, jobs created, and Botswana-made products reaching markets beyond the country.
