NETBALL CLUB WHERE MAGIC MEETS DISCIPLINE ON THE COURT - HOCUS POCUS
Established in May 2022, Hocus Pocus Netball Club is a rising force in the local netball scene, proudly founded and based in Tlokweng, Gaborone. The team calls the Tlokweng Community Junior Secondary School courts home, where training takes place consistently from Monday to Friday, 16:40 to 18:30. From the very beginning, Hocus Pocus was built on passion, commitment, and a shared love for the game.
The name Hocus Pocus was chosen deliberately. Just like magic, the team aims to inspire awe on the court. It represents creativity, teamwork, and the power to achieve what may seem impossible. Every match is a performance, every play a reminder that belief and unity can turn effort into excellence.
In terms of playing style, speed and agility best define Hocus Pocus. The team sees itself as different parts of a machine, each player with a specific role, all working seamlessly toward one common goal. This strong sense of identity has helped the team grow both technically and mentally.
Like many community teams, Hocus Pocus has faced challenges missed training sessions due to exhaustion, distance, or simple fatigue. However, instead of allowing these obstacles to weaken the team, they addressed them through open communication and constant encouragement. By reminding one another to prioritize their love for the sport and to communicate when challenges arise, the team has built a culture of understanding and accountability.
One of the most cherished moments in the club’s journey was defeating Rocky Girls during the constituency games. That victory remains a highlight close to the team’s heart, symbolizing the rewards of discipline, belief, and hard work.
Discipline is a core value at Hocus Pocus. To the team, discipline means doing what needs to be done even when you don’t feel like it. They stick to the plan, show up consistently, and always give their all even in the absence of their coach. This self-driven commitment is where true discipline begins. Communication, trust, and moving as one are not just ideals but daily practices. Individually, each player is encouraged to own their role, sharpen their skills, build confidence, and always bring their A-game onto the court.
The team draws inspiration from local experienced players who continue to uplift and inspire young talent. One of their biggest inspiration teams is BDF CATS, whose dedication and consistency exemplify what commitment to sport truly looks like.
Beyond competition, Hocus Pocus is about sisterhood. The team’s bond is strengthened by their shared love for netball and their diverse professional backgrounds, which allow for networking, mentorship, and personal growth. Through this, they create a safe and empowering space where young girls can explore their potential, both on and off the court.
Motivation within the team stems from a collective desire to succeed. Their zeal and love for netball drive their preparation for every tournament and significant match. By setting clear goals, showing up for training, engaging in team talks, and polishing their natural talent, Hocus Pocus ensures they are always ready to compete.
In the short term, the team aims to continue improving their skills, winning games, and building strong teams. In the long run, their vision is to become recognized and respected within the netball community. Hocus Pocus is not just a netball team it is a symbol of empowerment, unity, discipline, and excellence in sport, proving that when passion meets purpose, magic truly happens.
