Hadhimu (Ancestral spirit).

The Hambukushu society believe that when a person dies it is the body that perishes while the spirit and soul of that person still lives, the spirit of the living dead as others may call them are called “HADHIMU” in Thimbukushu language, these spirit possess special powers since they can take information from the living to the creator and vice versa. Hadhimu maintain a spiritual connection with their living relatives and generally most of them are good and kind, typical hambukushu people believe in the guidance of their ancestor’s spirits that’s why you would hear them say “HANA TAWA HADHIMU” in case there are favorable situations or circumstances being experienced in life or any occurrences.

“Hadhimu ku neyanga mu yirota, pamweya kukona kuku toya mena ghawo, awo kwa retanga mbudhi koyu hana dhi tambithera endi koyu hana nomonona po padiko” and sometime they reveal themselves through calamity, sickness, barrenness or bad luck, and so forth, If the living fail to understand the message of the ancestors, the person will continuously be inflicted unless they employ the services of a diviner endi nganga who will tell them that that they have a call from their own ancestors which they are obliged to answer or honour, the “nganga” is a link between the ancestors and the living as he/she is able to interpret the message of the ancestors for the living.

The HaMbukushu communities also believe that “hadhimu” act as representatives of ethical values, traditions and activities, despite the fact that hadhimu are the departed relatives who are now living in the spiritual world they are regarded as the guardians of morality and punish those who break taboos and customs by inflicting them with variety of sickness or misfortunes.

Hadhimu provided people with land on which they depend for food, building, as dwelling and burial places, in order for one to avoid their problems it is required by them to be honored and appreciated through sacrifices.
