Wait… Since When Do Banks Have SIM Cards?😱

Today I had one of those small moments that makes you pause and think.

I was helping a tourist from South Africa get a Mascom SIM card, and when he opened the SIM tray on his phone, I noticed something that genuinely caught me off guard. The other slot already had an FNB SIM card in it. For a second I had to double-check what I was seeing. A bank… with its own SIM card?

I did a little research and it turns out that FNB offers mobile services through what’s called a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) model. Essentially, they use existing telecom infrastructure while integrating mobile services directly into their banking ecosystem. Airtime, data, rewards, and account management can all sit inside the same financial platform.

What surprised me most wasn’t just that a bank could offer a SIM card, but what it represents. Industries we once thought were completely separate are starting to merge more and more. Telecom companies provide connectivity, banks provide financial services, and now the lines between the two are becoming increasingly blurred.

Yeah neh😅 Sometimes the most interesting insights don’t come from reports or conferences. They come from simple everyday moments… like opening a SIM tray and realizing the world of business is changing right in front of you.

The past three months have been one of the most reflective and transformative periods of my professional life. My time with Cohort 10C at the Institute of Entrepreneurship Development (IED) has officially come to an end. The programme, funded through FNB Botswana’s First Youth Programme, managed to pack an incredible amount of learning into just three months, with sessions twice a week for three hours.

One of the most powerful exercises we went through was discovering our Ikigai which sits at the intersection between what we love, what we are good at, what the world needs, and what we can be paid for. After a lot of reflection, mine became surprisingly simple:

My Ikigai is to connect.

• Connect people to opportunities.
• Connect businesses to talent.
• Connect ideas to systems that make them work in the real world.

Looking back, it suddenly explained so many things about the work I’ve been drawn to. My background in design, marketing, and digital systems, the platforms I’ve been conceptualising, and the ventures I’ve worked on all revolve around building structures that connect people, markets, and opportunities.

Another eye-opening moment during the programme came when we tested our CVs against modern ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems). Despite using paid CV-building software that claimed high compatibility scores, my CV initially scored 57% ATS friendliness. After adjusting the wording, structure, and formatting, I improved it to 94% ATS compatibility. That improved version is the one I used when applying for jobs and it ultimately helped me secure a new position as a Retail Sales Assistant at Mascom Wireless in Mahalapye.

As part of the programme, we also had to develop a venture project. Mine was iSpane, a mobile application concept designed to connect freelance professionals with businesses, startups, and NGOs that need expert help on short-term projects. It’s essentially a platform designed to bring structure, trust, and accessibility to freelance work in Botswana, starting with Gaborone and eventually scaling further.

What amazes me most is how much ground we managed to cover in such a short time: personal purpose, venture feasibility, market analysis, financial planning, and business modelling all within three months!

For anyone who feels stuck professionally (whether you are self-employed, unemployed, or simply trying to find clearer direction in your career) I strongly recommend giving programmes like this a try. The structure, mentorship, and reflection can genuinely shift how you see your skills and the opportunities around you.

Grateful for the experience, the people I shared the journey with in Cohort 10C, and excited for the next chapter.

This caricature is funny… but uncomfortably accurate.

A camera in one hand and a phone in the other because I operate at the intersection of creativity, sales, and strategy. Every space I step into becomes a classroom. Every role becomes research.

I’m going into 2026 differently.

Not with a long list of resolutions, but with better awareness of how I work, where I lose focus, and what actually moves things forward. Last year taught me that progress doesn’t come from doing more, it comes from being clearer and more consistent. This year, I’m choosing structure over chaos and learning over rushing.

No big announcements. Just steady work.

If you’re building something this year, I hope you give yourself permission to move at a sustainable pace.

Design Glow-Up! 😇

I just wrapped up a project with Realic Professional & Technical College (REPTEC) helping them refresh their admission graphics. They asked for a visual upgrade, and we delivered a strategic transformation.

Check out the evolution:

First Pic: Busy flyer with all the info.
Second Pic: Clean, eye-catching social media ad with a strong student photo.
Third Pic: Super professional, evergreen design that is perfect for long-term campaigns. We listened to their feedback (no model, text only and change the date to January 2026) and delivered the final, polished product.

It's all about making the visuals work harder for the client, turning complex info into clear, actionable design. Fingers crossed this partnership leads to a full retainer for us! 🤞

Frank Mason Robinson (1845–1923), a bookkeeper for pharmacist John S. Pemberton, played a pivotal role in creating the iconic Coca-Cola brand. In 1886, while working at the Pemberton Chemical Company in Atlanta, Robinson suggested the name "Coca-Cola," believing the alliteration of the two "C"s would be visually striking in advertising. He designed the logo using Spencerian script, a flowing, elegant handwriting style popular among bookkeepers at the time, which conveyed sophistication and distinctiveness. This script, first used in 1887, became the foundation for Coca-Cola’s visual identity. Robinson also crafted early marketing strategies, including newspaper ads in the Atlanta Journal and distributing free drink coupons, helping establish the brand’s popularity. The logo, initially in black, later incorporated the brand’s signature red and white color scheme, with minor adjustments over time, such as trademark placements. Standardized in 1923, the logo has remained largely unchanged, symbolizing timelessness and global recognition. Robinson’s design, rooted in simplicity and memorability, is still used on billions of Coca-Cola products today, making it one of the most recognizable logos worldwide.

Honestly, I’m kinda shocked 😅

When my LinkedIn got hacked back in 2023, I lost everything (connections, projects, and all the momentum I’d built over the years). Starting a new profile last month felt like starting from zero… this time no familiar faces, just sending requests to strangers who probably had no reason to connect with me.

Still, I told myself I’d post 3–4 times a week, even if it felt like shouting into the void. For weeks it was just a handful of likes and a few hundred impressions.

Then out of nowhere this week, one simple post took off way more than I expected 🙌 It’s not “I’ve made it” yet, but it feels like a sign I’m figuring out what clicks.

Moral of the story: consistency really does pay off, even if the wins are small at first.

Loving this "graphic designer is on leave" trend. 😂

It's just a fun, low-effort way to be real for a second. No fancy designs, just a simple joke that everyone gets.

Sometimes the best content is just... not trying so hard.

Stuart Watson, former Executive Creative Director at DesignStudio, led the Premier League’s new identity rebrand, crafted with Robin Brand Consultants to reflect fans, communities, and players. A six-month audit showed 90% stakeholder support for the iconic lion, symbolizing strength. Eye-tracking guided 600 sketches, focusing on the lion’s face. The wordmark, now in a lower-case custom FF Mark font by Monotype, aligns neatly for a friendlier tone, marking the league’s third identity in 24 years.

NOT GOING ACCORDING TO PLAN

The unveiling of Botswana’s new commemorative P50 banknote honoring our Olympic heroes is a proud moment but it has also sparked strong emotions.

By removing Sir Seretse Khama, our founding president, from the note, the Bank of Botswana may not have fully considered the cultural and societal implications of such a change. Currency isn’t just money; it’s a national symbol and a branding tool that carries deep meaning across generations.

A more balanced approach could have been:

• Introducing a new denomination (e.g., a P500 note) with the Olympians, while keeping Seretse Khama on the P50.

• Or placing the Olympians on a smaller coin/note, such as the 50 thebe, so both history and modern achievement are celebrated without overshadowing one another.

• Or releasing dual editions of the P50; one with a refreshed image of Sir Seretse Khama, and one commemorating our athletes.

In branding and marketing, symbols matter. They shape how people connect emotionally with a product, service, or even a nation’s currency. The lesson here:

When refreshing a legacy brand, innovation should honor the past while celebrating the present.
