SATURDAY SERVICE BY BROTHER BRENT
THEME:THE PURPOSE OFPRAYER
KEY LESSONS
THE PURPOSE OF PRAYER

1. Meaning of Prayer

Prayer is communication with God. It is the means through which a person communicates with God, expresses their heart, asks for help, gives thanks, worships Him and seeks His direction.

Prayer is not a monologue but a dialogue. This means that prayer is not only about talking to God; it also involves taking time to listen to God, receiving His direction and obeying what He says.

Therefore, prayer involves:

Talking to God.

Listening to God.

Seeking God's direction.

Asking God for help and guidance.

Thanking and worshipping God.

Presenting our needs and concerns to God.

Responding to God's instructions through obedience.

Key idea: Prayer is a relationship and communication between God and His people.

Scripture: 2 Kings 20:1–6

This passage demonstrates the importance of prayer when Hezekiah was facing a serious situation. He prayed to God, and God heard his prayer and responded to him.

2. Prayer Is Not an Option

Prayer should not be treated as something that Christians do only when they have problems. Prayer is an essential part of the Christian life.

A believer needs prayer in good times and difficult times. We should develop a lifestyle of prayer rather than praying only when we need something from God.

Luke 18:1

Jesus taught His disciples that they should always pray and not give up.

This teaches us that:

Prayer should be continuous.

We should not become discouraged when answers seem delayed.

Christians should develop consistency in prayer.

Prayer should become part of our daily lives.

Pray Without Ceasing

To pray without ceasing does not necessarily mean that a person must remain on their knees every minute of the day. It means maintaining an attitude and lifestyle of dependence on God and communicating with Him regularly.

PURPOSES OF PRAYER

1. Restoring Fellowship With God

One important purpose of prayer is to restore and maintain our relationship with God.

Sin can damage our fellowship with God. Prayer gives us an opportunity to come before God, confess our sins, ask for forgiveness and restore our relationship with Him.

Prayer helps us to reconnect with God

When we pray, we acknowledge that we need God in our lives. We humble ourselves before Him and seek His presence.

Prayer therefore helps us to:

Confess our sins.

Ask God for forgiveness.

Draw closer to God.

Rebuild our relationship with Him.

Develop intimacy with God.

Recognise our dependence on Him.

When a person realises that they have moved away from God because of sin, they can come before God in prayer and sincerely repent.

Prayer is therefore not only about asking God for things; it is also about developing a relationship with Him.

2. Prayer Helps Us to Seek God's Help and Direction

Prayer gives us an opportunity to bring our situations before God and ask Him for help.

This teaches believers to come before God with their needs and trust Him.

When we go through difficult situations, we should not depend only on our own understanding. We should seek God through prayer.

3. Prayer Shows Our Dependence on God

A person who refuses to pray may demonstrate that they believe they can live without depending on God.

4.Prayer Aligns Our Will With God's Will
Prayer is not simply forcing God to do what we want.one of the major purpose of prayer is to bring our desires into agreement with God's will.

5. Prayer Is Not Simply About Getting What We Want

A common misunderstanding is that prayer is a way of getting everything we desire.

When we pray according to God's will, we learn to desire the things that are pleasing to Him.

1 John 5:14

The Bible teaches that when we ask according to God's will, He hears us.

Therefore, effective prayer involves knowing God's will and praying according to it.

8. Prayer Gives Us Strength and Power

Another purpose of prayer is to receive strength from God.

There are times when human strength is not enough. We may become tired, discouraged, afraid or overwhelmed.

Through prayer, we can ask God to strengthen us.

Prayer helps us to face difficult situations
