The Ministry of Health is facing medical negligence and malpractice claims worth over P6.5 billion, Parliament has heard. This came in response to a question from Kanye West MP Victor Phologolo.

The claims relate to alleged cases of medical errors, negligence, and poor patient care. Since 2021, over 250 cases have been recorded -including 69 in 2021, 33 in 2022, 50 in 2023, 60 in 2024, and 41 so far in 2025.

While the Ministry could not confirm the exact amount paid out, it said individual settlements range between P150,000 and P3 million, depending on the nature of the case.

To reduce such incidents and financial impact, the Ministry has established a Medico Legal Unit, intensified training for health workers, and is prioritising out-of-court settlements where possible.

More than 1,200 jobs in Botswana have been affected following the withdrawal of USAID funding, it was revealed during a recent session of Parliament.

Responding to a question from Kanye East MP Prince Mosanana, the Ministry of Health said over 25 civil society organisations that had been delivering essential community health services across the country were impacted.

These organisations had been implementing HIV/AIDS and other public health programmes with support from the U.S. government. The end of this funding has disrupted service delivery and left many contract workers unemployed.

According to the Ministry, affected services have been redirected to nearby government health facilities. Efforts are also underway to retrain and upskill community health workers to maintain service delivery at the local level. Health programme restructuring is ongoing to ensure that access continues in areas that previously relied on community-based outreach.

Despite the challenges, the Ministry assured Parliament that service delivery continues and that long-term alternatives are being explored to close the gap left by the USAID exit.

Treating non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes and high blood pressure is now costing government more than HIV, according to Professor Sheila Tlou.

While HIV treatment has become more accessible and better supported through funding, managing NCDs often involves lifelong medication, frequent hospital visits, and high costs.

Speaking at a book launch in Gaborone, she said that while new HIV infections in Africa have dropped by 68%, cases of NCDs are rising fast and are putting more financial strain on Botswanaโ€™s already stretched public health system.

Prof. Tlou, a former Minister of Health and global HIV expert, led Botswanaโ€™s HIV response during the peak of the epidemic and played a key role in expanding access to treatment.

She was speaking at the launch of When All Else Had Failed: My 30kg (66lbs) Weight Loss Odyssey, a new book by Kiki Tebogo Moribame-Setiko.

The book tells the story of Kikiโ€™s personal health journey and the lifestyle changes that helped her avoid serious illness.

Prof. Tlou said Kikiโ€™s book is a vital reminder that personal choices can help prevent costly illnesses and ease pressure on Botswanaโ€™s health system.

Faced with sustained economic headwinds and a more discerning domestic traveller, Cresta Hotels is recalibrating its value proposition, shifting from traditional notions of comfort toward curated, experience led hospitality.

This week, the group unveiled The Cresta Bush Dinner Experience, a new product aimed at deepening guest engagement and driving local tourism spend.

Speaking at the launch event, Lorato Tebogo, Group Head of Marketing, positioned the offering as part of a broader strategy to adapt to shifting travel behaviour in a constrained economy.

โ€œConsumers are becoming more intentional with their spending. Theyโ€™re no longer just looking for a bed; theyโ€™re seeking meaningful experiences that offer connection and a sense of place,โ€ Tebogo said.

The Bush Dinner, rolled out under the groupโ€™s long running See Botswana Differently campaign, delivers an immersive outdoor dining experience rooted in local cuisine and landscape. The initiative reflects Crestaโ€™s growing emphasis on experiential travel as the group looks to maximise its footprint across 11 properties nationwide.

From business hotels in Gaborone and Francistown to leisure destinations in Maun and the Makgadikgadi region, Cresta is leveraging its national presence to package Botswana not just as a destination but as a journey worth exploring beyond the boardroom.

โ€œThis launch is part of a shift in how we think about hospitality,โ€ Tebogo added. โ€œItโ€™s no longer just about where you stay but how you experience the country while youโ€™re there.โ€

Additional product rollouts are expected in the coming months as the group intensifies efforts to align with evolving market expectations and extract greater value from domestic and regional travel flows.

French media giant Canal+ has moved a step closer to consolidating its presence in Africaโ€™s broadcasting market after regulators in Botswana and South Africa approved its proposed acquisition of MultiChoice Group. The multibillion-rand deal is set to reshape the continentโ€™s pay-TV and streaming industry amid rising competitive and financial pressures.

Canal+, which already owns 45.2 percent of MultiChoice, plans to acquire the remaining shares for R35 billion (about $2 billion), valuing the company at R55 billion. The offer stands at R125 per share.

Thereโ€™s a new reason to visit Jwaneng, and itโ€™s not underground.

Cresta Jwaneng has unveiled the Bush Dinner Experience, an open air evening designed to bring guests closer to Botswanaโ€™s landscape, flavours, and quiet magic. Set just outside town, the experience blends bonfires, local cuisine, and starlit skies into an unforgettable night under the Kalahari sky.

Last night, select members of the media were treated to an exclusive preview of the experience, complete with lantern lit tables, live music, and a curated menu showcasing locally sourced ingredients.

Think fire grilled meats, traditional favourites, and beautifully plated meals, with the option to add poetry, acoustic sets, or cultural dance.

โ€œIn a town where the earth yields the worldโ€™s most precious stones, we wanted to create something just as memorable above ground,โ€ said Julius Keepilwe, General Manager of Cresta Jwaneng.

Tailored for group bookings, the Bush Dinner is perfect for corporate events, celebrations, or travellers simply looking to see Jwaneng in a new light.

Bookings are available through Cresta Jwaneng.
