Mr Speaker, some of the key medicines and medical supplies currently in short supply include those used for managing hypertension, diabetes, eye conditions, asthma, sexual and reproductive health conditions, cancers, tuberculosis, HIV, and mental health conditions. We also have a noticeable shortage of essential consumables such as sutures and dressings, Minister of Health Dr. Stephen Modise said.

"As we speak now, the Ministry of Health owes BWP 433 039 793.62 in medical fees. These were expenses incurred for outsourcing of patients to private/non-government service providers, for services that are not available in government facilities. The bulk of the debt is for patients that were admitted at private facilities like Bokamoso Private Hospital, Gaborone Private Hospital, Sidilega Private Hospital, Francistown Academic Hospital and Riverside Private Hospital, as well as Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital, amongst others.

These were mainly for life-saving ICU care, operations, as well as for patients receiving chronic life-saving dialysis treatment," Dr Modise explained as he gave a statement on the state of medicines and other medical supplies in public health facilities.

So far, about P1, 162,000.00 has been paid to the consultant, who is yet to refund the government. It is said that the Director of Technical Services, Kaboyamodimo Raitoko, in the Ministry of Water and Human Settlement, has been aware of these fraudulent activities by the P**a Consultants, but he turned a blind eye until his juniors forced him to act.

BOSETU Slams UDC Led Government Over School Sports Launch

The Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU) has come out strongly against the UDC-led government, expressing shock over the planned launch of school sports and arts by President Duma Boko.

In a statement BOSETU revealed that it had received a communique from the Ministry of Sports and Arts, inviting stakeholders to a meeting to discuss the school sports initiative. What caught the union by surprise, however, was the revelation that President Boko himself would be launching the program.

“As BOSETU, we are shocked by the announcement of the launch of school sports and arts. What surprised us even more was learning that President Boko will be officiating the launch,” reads the statement.

The union reminded the public that under the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) regime, it had vehemently rejected the Matlhagolatsela initiative a similar school sports program citing its piecemeal nature and lack of meaningful reform. BOSETU emphasized that back then, it had the full support of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), which condemned Matlhagolatsela and advocated for a more comprehensive solution.

“It is both saddening and surprising that the UDC, now in government, has joyfully embraced Matlhagolatsela the same model they previously opposed to the extent of launching it,” the union said.
