SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS' FINANCE AND INVESTMENT COMPETITION STARTS

The Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE), in partnership with Stanbic Bank, is hosting the Senior Secondary Schools Finance and Investment Competition, which runs until 26 June 2026, with the winner to be announced.

The competition, which is in its 3rd edition under the Stock Market Stimulator, equips students with financial literacy skills and encourages a culture of investing from a young age. This year, thirty-four (34) senior secondary schools drawn from four (4) regions, namely West, East, North and South, are participating.

It is structured with a regional level focused on trading competition on the Stock Market Stimulator platform, in which all schools participate. The other structure is the National level, focusing on a quiz and Case study format, which only positions one from each region to proceed to compete.

GLOBAL FEDERATION OF EDUCATION TRADE UNIONS CELEBRATES THE RIGHT TO STRIKE RULING

The global federation of education trade unions, Education International (EI), is celebrating a historic victory for education unions worldwide following a ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) confirming that “the right to strike is a protected fundamental right.”

On May 21, 2026, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) handed down a historic landmark advisory opinion resolving a long-standing dispute between labour unions and employer organisations.

In a statement issued by the Education International (EI), published on its website, it said they have long defended that freedom of association is meaningless without the power to act collectively, without “the right to strike.”

The global federation said from classrooms to national capitals to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), education unions have consistently demonstrated that “the ability to take collective action is essential to protecting quality public education, good working conditions, and the dignity of the profession.”

According to EI, the ruling validates not only the legal rights but also the daily struggles of educators who organise, mobilise, and, when necessary, strike to defend their students, their professions and their communities.

EI says the responsibility now lies with the government and calls all ILO member states to fully respect and implement this ruling, remove unjustified restrictions on the right to strike, and engage in genuine, good-faith social dialogue with education unions.

MAELE BRIEFED ON THE UNIVERSITY OF BOTSWANA RESTRUCTURING EXERCISE

The Minister of Higher Education, Prince Maele, on Tuesday received a delegation from the University of Botswana (UB) for a briefing on the institution's recent restructuring exercise. The ‘Motho Le Motho Kgomo’ institution’s restructuring exercise is aimed at shifting the institution from a predominantly teaching facility to a research-intensive, high-performance organisation.

According to the Ministry’s social media platform, the delegation, led by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Dawid Katzke, also briefed Maele on other initiatives the institution intends to undertake in the near future. Before this engagement, according to the Ministry, Maele had also consulted other key stakeholders, including the UB Council and labour unions, to ensure that all parties were on board and that no one was left behind in the process.

TEACHERS DAY POSTPONED TO OCTOBER

As it has been the tradition over the years for teachers to gather in designated places to celebrate Teacher's Day, this year is different, as the day has been moved to 09 October 2026.

According to a statement released on Friday by the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education, bearing the logos of the four teachers' representatives, “The general public is informed that the annual National Teachers Day, which was scheduled for 1st June 2026, has been postponed to 9th October 2026.”

The statement noted that the decision to postpone the celebration was made at a meeting on 13th May 2026 among the Ministry of Child Welfare & Basic Education, the Ministry of Higher Education, and the Teacher Trade Unions BTU, BOSETU, BOPRITU, and BOPRITA.

The reasons advanced are that the celebration should align with World Teachers’ Day, which is celebrated in October, and that this would also allow the government to mobilise resources for the celebration, as the current government’s financial landscape does not permit comprehensive sponsorship of the event.

SA BASIC EDUCATION MINISTER SAYS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CANNOT REPLACE BASIC LEARNING

South Africa Basic Education Minister, Siviwe Gwarube, has called for stronger education systems across Africa, saying technology and artificial intelligence cannot replace basic literacy and numeracy skills.

According to Inside Education, speaking at the Education World Forum 2026 in London, Gwarube highlighted South Africa’s efforts to strengthen foundational learning and expand Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes.

“South Africa is investing R10 billion over three years to expand Early Childhood Development, and a further R496 million to create 115 000 ECD spaces in three of our most rural provinces of Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. These investments signify our commitment to children whose futures should not be determined by the circumstances of their birth,” she said.

Gwarube further said, “As a country, we can be proud of the strategic shift we have made towards strengthening the foundations of learning.” The R496 million allocation is linked to an outcomes-based early childhood development fund aimed at expanding access to early learning in Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.
