A message by the Leader of the Opposition:

Good Morning Belize,

Change does not require wealth, political connections, a title, or a position of power. It starts with ordinary people deciding that enough is enough.

We need our democracy to WORK.
As citizens we must remain engaged, vigilant and willing to challenge decisions that do not serve the national interest. Let us not underestimate the power of one voice. One voice can start a conversation. A conversation can build a Movement. A united People can demand change.

The Cabinet has indicated that, collectively, they do not support BTL’s Acquisition of SMART/SpeedNet. What the release did not say is whether their decision has any bearing on the decisions that have already been taken by the BTL Board in a 8-2 Vote to approve the acquisition and to proceed accordingly. So let us not celebrate prematurely. We must sustain the pressure until we have definitive answers to the questions that remain unanswered.

Let us keep the fires burning.
Let us keep pressing forward.

Stay Awake BELIZE!

The statement issued by Cabinet this afternoon stating categorically that they do not support the proposed $80 million BTL Acquisition of SMART/SpeedNet may represent a political retreat, but it does not establish that the proposed deal is legally, financially, and procedurally dead.

This is not a victory lap, not as yet. We need definitive answers.

* Does the acquisition require Cabinet approval to proceed, and if so, at what stage?

* What is the legal effect of the votes already taken by the BTL Board and the Social Security Board?

* Will Cabinet formally direct its Government-appointed representatives on the BTL Board and SSB to take whatever steps are necessary to rescind, reverse, or otherwise terminate their previous approvals?

* Has BTL entered into any binding commitment, undertaking, or contractual obligation arising from the 8-2 vote in favor of the acquisition?

* When will the BTL Board meet next? Will the acquisition be formally reconsidered at that meeting?

* Will the Government publicly disclose the relevant resolutions and documents so Belizeans can independently verify that the transaction cannot proceed?

We cannot and should not treat the matter as concluded until there is documentary and procedural certainty that the acquisition cannot and will not proceed.

Let us continue to sustain the pressure until we have answers to the pertinent questions. The vigilance of the Belizean people brought us to this point. Thank You. That vigilance must continue until we know, definitively, that this proposed acquisition will not proceed.

Stay Awake Belize!

The Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) says its planned protest will proceed as scheduled, despite Cabinet announcing that it does not support BTL’s proposed acquisition of SMART/Speednet.

The union says that until Government representatives on the BTL Board rescind their “yes” votes, the planned action continues.

“Solidarity Forever!”

𝐂𝐀𝐁𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐓 𝐒𝐀𝐘𝐒 𝐍𝐎 𝐓𝐎 𝐁𝐓𝐋–𝐒𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐓 𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐋

Cabinet has officially announced that it does not support BTL’s proposed acquisition of SMART/Speednet Ltd.

After weeks of public debate and concerns raised by social partners, the media and Belizeans, Cabinet says that following “careful deliberation,” it has decided not to support the proposed acquisition.

Cabinet acknowledged that the deal had become a matter of national concern and says it remains committed to listening to the Belizean people and acting in the national interest.

For now, the message is clear: Cabinet does NOT support the BTL–SMART deal.
