This past Saturday at the Mae Gordon Park in Belmopan, the Belize Grappling League, founded by Silvino Riverol, held their first competition of the year. We spoke with Benito Chub, the head coach of Cizin Jiu-Jitsu of Belmopan and the General Secretary of the Belize Jiu-Jitsu Association, explained that the competition featured men and women competitors, including children, from gyms across the country. He shared what makes this competition unique.

Chub said there were 11 winners during the competition, with Ronald G. Hyde of Belize Dark Arts Academy becoming the first ever Belize Grappling League Absolute Champion. Other winners include Pablo Enrique da Silva Araneda, Shane Tuyud, Jada Moro, Liam Pelayo, Jaden Cocom, William Robinson, Heillie Burns, Renan Carillo, Oscar Lopez, and Mervin Matute.

The National Elite Basketball League, NEBL, is making its grand return next month with seven teams located in all districts except Toledo. The last NEBL season was played in 2020 but due to the pandemic, that season was cut short. One of the leagueโ€™s marquee teams is The Belize City Defenders, which will be one of two teams calling the City home this season, the other being the San Pedro Tiger Sharks. Marketing Director for the Defenders, John Marsden Jr., said some familiar faces will return to the team, one such player being star Nigel Jones.

Marsden said there has been excitement among fans since the announcement of the return of the Defenders. He said that there is also excitement among the players as the league has committed prizes totaling $100,000 for the teams that make it to the finals, scheduled for July. Speaking of schedules, a first-of-its-kind double-header is set for opening night in Belize City on Friday, February 20. Marsden shared more details.

KREMANDALA shares Puntatopia proceeds with Garifuna Council Belize City

Belize City came alive on November 17 as KREMANDALA hosted its inaugural Puntatopia concert. Few may know that the media house partnered with the National Garifuna Councilโ€™s Belize City Branch to deliver the hugely successful event. Today, KREMANDALA kept its commitment by presenting part of the proceeds to the branch. Alexie Belisle has the story.

A group of volunteers, called the Nehemiah Skilled Volunteers with a membership of 11 men 2 women, have been assisting with the rebuilding efforts in Jamaica, which is still trying to recover after being hit by Hurricane Melissa. The group is faith-based and operates under the Belize Union Mission of Seventh Day Adventists and the Inter-American Division and inspired by the work of Nehemiah, who, according to the Bible, led the rebuilding of Jerusalemโ€™s walls.

Pastor David Campbell, who is leading the group, said they are now raising funds to return to Jamaica in February. Wilhelm Garnett, Sr., who is one of the volunteers, spoke of the situation in Jamaica and urged Belizeans to donate to the initiative, cautioning that our turn may soon come.
