Opinion piece: (what do I know? I’m just a rapper…)
It’s a challenge to find the right way forward with music and staying alive as a full time artist. I’ve been hearing a lot recently about artists removing music from streaming platforms because it’s frustrating to see how little streams pay. I think those feelings are valid, and of course, a musician’s music is worth a lot more than we get back on the money side of things.
BUT…
Every so often I get a message from somebody who tells me how much my music has meant to them, or inspired them, or kept them going through difficult times etc. It sounds mad corny, I know… but I’d much rather continue to receive those messages and keep my music on the streaming services where those people can hear it basically for free. I also can’t act like I don’t take advantage of the convenient, digital world we all take part in.
Q. Wouldn’t taking my music down from streaming services insist that I also remove the apps from my devices and find some other way to listen to music ?? (Spotify is the worst.. but all of the others could do much better too IMO)
I’m doing my best to keep up with my core fans thru email, YouTube and socials. (Prioritizing in that order) It’s been the best way to connect in a personal way and provide listeners with value, and from that there is some monetary support which I couldn’t keep doing this without. So huge shout to everyone in my email community!
The goal is sustainability through consistency. Not fat pockets and short-lived stardom. After all these years making music it’s nothing short of evident that the Indie route appeals to my soul more than the industry one… And my soul takes precedent over my gut. I love music and I love people. Following my heart seems to be working, and in a way that pulls me back down to earth when my head starts to get too big for my little body of work 😂🎈
I would like nothing more than to see Daniel Eck and his insulting mathematics bounced off the face of the planet 🚀 lol but this is where we live now, and fighting the future is a fool’s errand.
All that being said, my latest ep Geometrics (released on CD and DL last summer on my website) will stream in 2026.
