Tonight's 'family' meal for our transitional tenants was a huge success. The scalloped potatoes took a fair bit longer than was expected, but nobody complained. This meal, which was prepared by our formerly homeless guests for their brothers and sisters, was a far cry from the one slice of cheese, or single piece of meat sandwich that they receive from facilities run by the county or province, and everybody present could feel the sense of food security that is so important to those struggling to survive.
People being treated as respected members of society is the way to assist these fellow human beings to move forward, and to become once again productive members of society.
Politicians at all levels are far more concerned with what they can skim from the very limited services provided to these desperate people, and they are far more concerned with themselves than with ensuring the survival of these people.
We run the Big Blue Box Studios sanctuary on a shoestring, receiving nothing from the government, and only the pittance in rent that is paid for these people by a county and city who don't want them to find shelter.
How can we do this for eight people for essentially nothing, yet those who make a living from depriving the homeless claim to need hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars to provide less than is needed to survive, and much less than is being made available by us? Do the math. Where is our money going?
