Fire management specialists use a variety of tools to help with wildfire response, including drones. Overhead infrared scanning is crucial to prioritize locations for crew deployment and resource allocation.

🚁 How does it work? Skilled teams operate highly specialized, remotely piloted aircraft vehicles (RPAVs) with extremely powerful heat sensors. These sensors detect hotspots by using infrared that can pick up fire activity above or below ground.

🌙 Drones scan at night when ambient temperatures and fire activity are lower, providing additional contrast and safer, more accurate mapping. This allows crews to be deployed to priority areas of the fire in a timely way.

Last night, the drone detected hotspots on portions of the northeast and southeast perimeters. This means that the Buhl Fire is still hot and active even if you can’t see it. Every bit of rain is welcome, but the active fire will resurface when the sun comes back out.
