.…Celebrates Canada’s First Black Woman Elected to Parliament And The Visionary Behind Black History Month

The City of Brampton has paid a historic tribute to the Honorable Dr. Jean Augustine officially proclaimed September 9 as “Jean Augustine Day,” in recognition of her extraordinary life of leadership, public service, and lasting contributions to Canada.

The proclamation by the Mayor of Brampton, Patrick Brown, and members of the City Council coincides with Dr. Augustine’s 89th birthday, transforming the special milestone into a citywide celebration of one of Canada’s most respected and influential public figures.

Dr. Augustine made history in 1993 when she became the first Black woman elected to the House of Commons.

Throughout her distinguished career, she remained a courageous advocate for equality, education, multiculturalism, social justice, and the empowerment of women, young people, immigrants, and members of Black communities across Canada.

Her historic parliamentary motion led to the official recognition of February as Black History Month throughout Canada, creating an enduring national platform for celebrating the achievements, struggles, and contributions of Black Canadians.

Beyond her political accomplishments, Dr. Augustine has remained a mentor, community builder, and source of inspiration to generations.

Her life represents the power of courage, determination, and purposeful leadership to break barriers, open doors, and create opportunities for others.

The proclamation of Jean Augustine Day is, therefore, a fitting and well-deserved recognition of a remarkable woman whose influence extends far beyond public office.

It ensures that her exceptional service and contributions will continue to be celebrated and remembered for generations.
