I went to pick up a parcel at Zara and instead of someone digging through the back for ten minutes, I scanned a code and a robot pulled my package from a wall of automated shelves in seconds.
And here’s the part nobody expects: the staff were still there, all around the floor, doing what they do. This machine wasn’t replacing them. It was saving them from the boring, time-wasting part of the job and getting me out the door faster.
What surprised me most is that this has been running for a couple of years already. Quietly. No headlines. Most people walking past have no idea it exists.
And that’s what makes me pause. Right now it works alongside people, making everyone’s day easier. But what if this is just the start? What if the version we see today is the friendly one, and the real shift is still coming?
Maybe it stays this way. Maybe it doesn’t.
