Oki Siksika!

On Friday August 21, Siksika Employment and Training Services (SETS) hosted a summer student BBQ at the Piiksapi Memorial Arbour.

The day started with an opening prayer from Leanne Solway and opening remarks from Youth Chief & Council, Counsellor Darrell Daniels, SETS staff Tiffany Crow Chief and Carrie-Ann Backfat. Ice breaker games were led by Hannah Breaker, Riley Many Bears, and Jevon Holloway. Students in the summer employment program got to enjoy a day of activities such as traditional games, hand games, and a dunk tank, before ending with a high energy round of an Indian relay race.

Towards the end of the event, students and elders, danced to Michael Jackson and powwow music for a chance to win door prizes, followed by a closing prayer from Johnathon Sleigh.

A huge thank you to the Calgary Police for donating backpacks to the students! Good luck and enjoy the new school year students!

Missing Stampede? So are we!

Thankfully, we've got these awesome photos from one of our summer students, Syrianna Running Rabbit, to help us relive the fun and remember the yummy food!

Syrianna spent the day at the Calgary Stampede tasting and reviewing foods from the Big 4 Building and the food trucks across the grounds. From classic favourites to unique midway treats, there was plenty to enjoy and look forward to next year!

Let us know in the comments if you tried any of these foods, or which one you would try!👇

Oki Siksika,

Public Works concluded its community clean-up initiative at the beginning of the month, wrapping up efforts in the West End. To celebrate the successful completion of the project, the department invited community members and SNTA staff to a community barbecue at Admin Park on Aug. 14. The event marked the end of a successful clean-up campaign and provided an opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to the initiative.

Despite setbacks to the initiative, they pushed through working long hours in the heat and rain to ensure Siksika looked nice and tidy. Roads & Solid Waste Supervisor, Wendell Calf Robe, and Solid Waste Coordinator, Ivan Scott, thanked community members who came out and helped when Public Works rolled into their community. They additionally praised this year’s summer students for helping them stay on track.

Public Works marked the BBQ with an awards ceremony for the cleanest yard, presenting the third and second place awards to Doreen Jerry and Tina Healy. Winning first place for the cleanest yard was Deloris Right Hand. Ivan personally delivered Doreen Jerry’s award.

Calf Robe and Ivan presented additional awards to the Media department for their coverage and support, and to a youth who played an important role in helping keep Public Works staff safe by guiding them through dangerous areas within his community.

Thank you to the winners, Public Works, and to everyone who helped keep our community safe and clean!
