Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has reminded international students that a Canadian study permit is a temporary immigration status — not a guarantee of permanent residence. 🇨🇦🎓
Her comments come amid ongoing debate over international students, work permits, immigration levels and pathways for graduates hoping to remain in Canada.
A study permit allows you to study in Canada for a limited period, while graduates may qualify for a work permit only if they meet the applicable requirements. Canadian education alone does not guarantee permanent residence.
Anyone planning to stay after their authorized period must maintain valid status or qualify for another legal status.
Before spending thousands on tuition, students should understand their full immigration pathway and available PR options.
Study → Work eligibility → Canadian experience → PR options 🍁
Should international students receive clearer information about post-graduation immigration pathways before enrolling?
