It was supposed to be the one perfect photo.
You'd finally gotten the boys to sit still by the tree — red Santa hats straight, cream sweaters not yet covered in cookie crumbs, a little mountain of wrapped presents in front of you. You lifted your phone and said it:
"Okay, one perfect Christmas photo, everyone smile!"
That's when the presents rustled.
At first you thought it was the cat. Then the green one wiggled. The red one bounced. The ribbons untied themselves with a soft *RUSTLE! RATTLE!*
"Mom... the gifts are moving?" Leo whispered, pointing.
Four lids popped open at once. Little arms, little legs, little bow-topped heads popped out. Four gift-box creatures blinked up at you, beaming.
"Wait, we haven't opened you yet!" you laughed, half shocked, half trying not to drop your phone.
They didn't want to be opened. They wanted to be included. They hopped into your lap in a conga line, wrapping you all up in their loose ribbons, giggling.
"We wanted a family photo first!" the red one squeaked.
You squeezed together — you, your two boys, and three very proud presents — and hit CLICK!
Behind you, through the frosted window, Santa was peeking in, snowflakes in his beard. He saw the flash, put a finger to his lips — *shhh* — smiled like he'd planned the whole thing, and disappeared into the night.
The photo was blurry, crooked, full of ribbons and laughter.
It was perfect.
