A Gift of Light

Lena had always believed in the power of small kindnesses. Every week, she volunteered at the children’s hospital, reading stories, bringing small gifts, or simply sitting beside young patients who needed company.

One day, she met Elle, a quiet six-year-old with leukemia. Her tiny frame seemed lost in the hospital bed, and her big brown eyes held a sadness far too deep for someone so young. Lena smiled warmly and held out a small handmade lantern, painted with stars.

“This is for you, Elle,” she said. “When you feel scared at night, let this remind you that light always finds a way into the darkness.”

Elle took the lantern, her fingers tracing the glowing stars. For the first time in weeks, he smiled.

As the days passed, Elle grew stronger. She carried the lantern everywhere, even through difficult treatments, calling it his light of hope. Other children began asking for lanterns, and soon, Lena and a team of volunteers crafted dozens of them.

Months later, when Elle was finally discharged, she hugged Lena tightly. “You gave me light when I was scared,” she whispered. “Now I want to do that for others.”

Years passed, and Elle, now a healthy teenager, returned to the same hospital—not as a patient, but as a volunteer, carrying a box full of handmade lanterns.

Because kindness, once given, never fades. It only grows, shining brighter in the hearts it touches.
