Our Story
2018 Highlights: Recipient of the “Inspiring Mentors” Award. Best-Selling Contributing Author, “I AM a Brilliant Woman Vol. III”.
Tag Line: “Changing Lives....One Voice at a Time.”
Quotable Quotes: “Be the Voice you wish to hear in the world. Be the Voice that needs to be heard. Be the Voice...........”
Thirty years as a registered (B.Sc. O.T. McGill) occupational therapist (in a number of medical/ rehab/ creative arts therapies/ special needs/ mental health and long-term care areas) as well as thirty plus (plus) years in the performing arts industry (vocalist/ performer/ bandleader/ consultant/ adjudicator and lead singer of the former legendary band “Dynaflow”) allows me to offer a multi-layered, multi-dimensional, functional, fun and contemporary approach to vocal performance training. You or your child receives solid, supportive, caring, mature coaching and mentorship. You get more than just your one hour per week for you or your child. You are offered experiential opportunities (individual and group-oriented) to complement weekly training sessions while developing new skill sets and nurturing individual interests and aptitudes, confidence and esteem-building while trying out new things, new styles and genres and new experiences. Collaboration is highly encouraged. You get continued communication with me throughout the week as you wish, as to how you and your child is doing or inquiring as to what is coming up. As well as having a degree in Occupational Therapy from McGill University, I have worked with many bands, ensembles, orchestras and been on stage in musical theatre, so I know what it takes to do this. I also know what the contemporary youth of today want to do, what they love to sing along with and how they need to feel affirmed and encouraged. I will work on pop, jazz, country, rock, alternative, musical theatre, theory, etc. (also beginner’s piano), but no conservatory repertoire, which also means no exams. Each student is unique. I have worked with many students who have been involved in dance and other related performing or visual arts programs and understand the requirements of all of those. Enhancing musicality, singing abilities and vocal performance skills makes your child a better “total” performer. And we all know “singing” can be fun and a happy, gratifying activity. Conveniently located in Braeside S.W. in a bright, welcoming and spacious, private home studio. Ask for the “What You Get” and “Testimonials” handouts. Areas of Expertise: 1. Older elementary school students who require confidence and esteem building, exposure to the broader world of music and a variety of genres, assistance with problem-solving and speech-related skills, vocal technique and music-reading skills and those at this stage who have unique learning styles and benefit greatly for individualized mentorship and group support. No exams, no pressure, no conservatory syllabus. Singing to uncover and explore what youth wish and love most to sing. Singing for fun and discovery! Singing to determine specific directions, school requirements, audition requirements and thus pre-preparation and opportunities to perform in a supportive environment! 2. Junior and Senior High School. Advanced skill-sets, developing innate musical expressiveness, interests and originality. Again, no classical nor opera, no exams, just learning and practical application. All other styles will be covered. Singer-songwriters, musical theatre grooming, band members, engagement in the more technical aspects of setting up before a gig and collaboration with others. Why do I particularly encourage September to June registration for these two age groups? (Although of course students may start later in the season if that is your wish and more realistically doable.) Why? Because workshops are scheduled throughout the year in stages and formatted on building blocks. Starting later in the semester may mean missing certain important workshops that will not be scheduled again because of timeliness and availability of the specialist presenters. “Life skills training” is a huge component in terms of preparation for audition and showcase situations with other venues, where students must be “coachable: cooperative and collaborative. 3. University and Young Adults. Perhaps already writing original tunes and proficient in playing a number of instruments and comfortable in doing open mics and jams. Or not. Perhaps you wish to form a band, discover your branding, be connected with an artist development producer or some other professional in the music industry. Pop, rock, indie, folk, alternative, country…) 4. Adults. Beginners to Advanced. Any stage. Boomers, Zoomers, Late Bloomers? A dream re-imagined? A passion re-ignited? Perhaps you are in your middle to retiring years and have put a number of things on the back-burner while you were working or parenting thus leading you to become a “Shadow Artist (Julia Cameron)”. Well, being 63 years of age, I know this only too well in addition to the number of life experiences, transitions and transformations I personally have had to go through over my many years, careers and avocations. Please allow me to assist you. From individual mentoring to “For Adults Only” field trips and specialty workshops (songwriting, harmony, introduction to professional musicians, outings to a recording studio, etc.). Preparation for karaoke, open mics, community musical theatre, family and social events? Together we will uncover and discover your unique voice and your special talents.
