The smelt dip netting season opens on April 1st and runs until June 15th.

✅ The catch limit for smelt is 60 per person/day for personal use only. Remember to count your fish, as there can be more in the bucket than you realize.
✅ No license is required to dip net or fish smelts.
✅ Avoid walking in the stream where smelts are spawning, as this can destroy the eggs.
✅ Where possible, select males over females

NEW FOR 2026: A section of the West River in Bonshaw is now closed to dip netting as a conservation measure. This includes all of the river between the outlet of Crosby's Pond and the footbridge at the Green Road.
