The first time I encountered the term “post-colonial lens“ was in a peace studies course at Selkirk College in the early 2000s. We students were encouraged to analyze selected writings based on different lenses, or points of view.
At the time, the assumption being presented to me was that North America was now in a post-colonial era. In the past 20 years, I have belatedly come to realize that is simply not true.
Colonization continues to infect the planet. Some countries are experiencing chronic symptoms, other populations are in acute crisis. As a nurse, I think in terms of health, or illness. Sustainability through balance, or dis-ease due to greed. Our Global community is still fighting this deadly virus.
And ground zero is each of us.
The antidote is education, self-reflection, humility, more education, honesty, generosity, and probably more education. (This is not a complete list.)
Every moment we choose to perpetuate or eradicate this illness. And that choice is directly linked to your heart.❤️
