At Clarity Psychology we are always trying to help our clients be as comfortable in our space as possible. We know that a lot of the children in our clinic have diverse needs, which is why we built our “sensory space.” This is a wonderful place for kids to explore, regulate, or play. Sometimes kids might come into this space during their session and other times, it can be used as a waiting space for our child clients or their siblings.

Have you noticed that when you see someone do something kind, you do the same? This is due to a known social psychological phenomenon called "prosocial contagion." Prosocial contagion refers to the phenomenon where kind, helpful, or cooperative behaviors spread from one person to another through social influence. When someone witnesses an act of generosity, empathy, or compassion—such as helping a stranger, expressing gratitude, or volunteering—it often inspires them to behave similarly. This “ripple effect” occurs because observing positive actions activates similar emotional and cognitive responses in others, reinforcing social norms that value caring and connection. Over time, prosocial contagion can strengthen relationships, foster community, and create environments where kindness and cooperation become self-sustaining patterns.

We have been hearing the term "neurodiversity" more and more in our culture, but what exactly does this mean?

"Neurodiversity" is the idea that differences in the way people think, learn, and process information are a natural and valuable part of human variation—much like differences in personality, culture, or physical traits. It recognizes that conditions such as autism, ADHD, learning differences, and others are not simply “disorders” to be fixed, but reflect diverse ways of experiencing and interacting with the world. The neurodiversity movement encourages understanding, acceptance, and inclusion, emphasizing that support should focus on helping individuals thrive by building on their strengths and accommodating their unique needs, rather than trying to make folks conform to more "neurotypical" expectations.

Are you curious if you or child might be neurodiverse? We are thrilled to offer assessments of ADHD, Autism, and learning disorders at Clarity Psychology to help better understand these questions. Feel free to reach out and book an assessment consultation with our Director, Dr. Sean Barford, RPsych, to discuss further.

We often have folks ask us what the difference between assessment and counselling actually is and this is a great questions!

Psychological assessment and counselling are both important parts of psychological practice, but they serve very different purposes. Psychological assessment focuses on understanding a person’s functioning through standardized testing, structured interviews, and clinical observation. It aims to answer specific questions—such as clarifying a diagnosis, identifying learning or attention difficulties, or assessing cognitive or emotional strengths and weaknesses. The process is typically time-limited, objective, and results in a comprehensive written report with recommendations.

Counselling, on the other hand, is an ongoing, collaborative process focused on emotional healing, personal growth, and behaviour change. It helps clients explore feelings, develop coping skills, and improve relationships or well-being over time.

In short, assessment provides insight and direction, while counselling provides support and change.
