The spotlight effect refers to our tendency to overestimate how much other people notice and remember about us, especially in social situations. In other words, we feel like we’re constantly in the spotlight even though most people are paying far less attention than we think.

The spotlight effect is rooted in egocentrism, a natural cognitive bias where we see ourselves as the center of our own experience. Because we’re so focused on our own thoughts, actions, and appearance, we mistakenly assume others are too.

This happens because we anchor on our own perspective, then fail to adjust enough when trying to imagine what others see.

Researchers at Cornell University asked college students to wear an embarrassing t-shirt (featuring singer Barry Manilow) and then enter a room full of other students. Afterward, they were asked how many people they thought noticed the shirt. Participants guessed about 50% noticed. In reality, only around 25% did. This showed a consistent overestimation of others' attention, even in a clearly self-conscious situation.

Understanding the spotlight effect helps reduce social anxiety, perfectionism, and fear of embarrassment. It’s a reminder that people are usually more focused on themselves than on judging us.

Johann Hari is a journalist and author who explores the roots of emotional distress. In Lost Connections, he challenges the idea that depression is only a chemical issue, and instead highlights how disconnection — from meaning, relationships, and purpose — plays a central role. This eye-opening read reframes mental health and invites us to heal through reconnection and community.

When it comes to mental health care, both psychologists and Canadian Certified Counsellors (CCCs) offer valuable support. Have you ever wondered what the difference is? Here are some of the ways to understand the differences between these two titles:

1. Regulation:
- Psychologists in Alberta are regulated by the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) under The Health Professions Act (provincial legislation). CCCs are certified nationally through the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), which is not regulated by specific provincial or federal legislation.

2. Assessment and Diagnosis:
Registered psychologists can formally assess and diagnose mental health disorders such as ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, learning disorders, and anxiety disorders. CCCs provide meaningful therapeutic support; CCCs are not trained to diagnose or conduct standardized psychological assessments.

3. Scope of Training and Practice:
Psychologists complete graduate-level training in psychology, plus extensive supervised practice and examinations specific to Alberta legislation.
CCCs also hold graduate degrees in counselling or related fields; the certification process is not regulated by a provincial health college though designated amounts of supervised practice rare required for registration.

REMINDER: Laurel Miyash*ta, M.C., Registered Provisional Psychologist has immediate availability for new clients! Because Laurel is a Provisional Psychologist, she is able to offer client's services at a reduced fee of $190/session.

What is a Registered Provisional Psychologist?

In Alberta, individuals training to become Registered Psychologists are termed “Registered Provisional Psychologists.” Provisional Psychologists differ from Registered Psychologists in that:

- Their work is supervised by a Registered Psychologist. This means that their cases are discussed with their supervisor, their supervisor has full access to all of their documentation and files, supervisors may view live or recorded sessions, and supervisors hold responsibility for the welfare of the client.

- They are working towards the requirements of registration. This means that they are completing a minimum of 1600 hours of supervised practice and 107 hours of supervision, and they are working towards completion of licensing examinations including the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology and the Law & Ethics for Alberta Psychologists Exam.

Laurel is unique in that she has completed all requirements towards registration with the exception of her hours. Laurel also has 25 years of experience working in healthcare as a Registered Nurse and thus brings a wealth of experience to her work. Laurel is also a Grief Recovery Method Specialist.

Exposure therapy is a highly effective, evidence-based treatment for anxiety disorders, phobias, PTSD, and OCD. It helps people face their fears gradually and safely, with the guidance and support of a trained therapist.

Exposure therapy is build on the premise of habituation - the idea that our emotional reactivity to a stimulus will lessen with repeated contacts with that stimulus. Exposure therapy also gives our brain the chance to learn that perceived threats are actually not as threatening as we may believe. Exposure therapy take several sessions where feared stimuli is faced in a hierarchical fashion until habituation of each stimulus on the hierarchy occurs. Exposure therapy is highly structured in nature and should only be completed with a trained therapist.
