Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest hubs, said Wednesday it saw a sharp drop in passengers during the second quarter as the Iran war disrupted air travel and prompted many travellers to choose routes that avoided the Middle East.

The airport recorded 13 million passengers during the second quarter, following 31.5 million passengers in the first half. That was a 31.3 per cent drop over passenger traffic in the first half of 2025, the airport said.

Air traffic in the United Arab Emirates and elsewhere in the Gulf region was disrupted by shutdowns and restrictions after the United States and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28. The Dubai airport itself suffered minor damage in attacks from Iran.

Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa created history on Friday, becoming the first Indian to win the Grand Chess Tour after staging a remarkable comeback to defeat defending champion Fabiano Caruana in the final.

The Indian takes home a hefty $200,000 prize and secures a guaranteed spot in next year’s tour.

Global Affairs Canada aware of missing Canadians
Global Affairs Canada said in a media update on Thursday it was aware of about 30 missing Canadian citizens and permanent residents in Nepal and Tibet.

"Given the extremely difficult circumstances on the ground, this number will fluctuate as new information comes in," Global Affairs Toronto's Nepali-Canadian community waits for word of loved ones after flash floods.

"Our consular officials are working urgently to establish contact with them and confirm their safety. They are also reaching out to travel agencies, local authorities and likeminded countries to gather additional information."

Global Affairs Canada said it is deploying five consular officials to Kathmandu to support Canadians and co-ordinate with local officials and partners and will provide further resources as needed.

Anita Anand, minister of foreign affairs, said Canadian officials are working urgently to get in touch with missing Canadians and confirm they are safe.
