After 45 years, a cold case in Blount County has finally reached a major breakthrough. Human remains discovered in the East Miller’s Cove area in 1981 have been identified as William Thomas Green born March 29, 1942.

While initial forensic estimates placed the man between 20 and 35 years old, modern technology eventually provided the answer. In March 2025, authorities worked with a private lab to identify potential relatives through genetic genealogy. A DNA comparison with a family member later confirmed William’s identity.

Originally from Knoxville, William was last seen by his family around 1977. Investigators are now shifting their focus to the events leading up to his death. If you have any information regarding William Thomas Green or his associates in the late 1970s, please contact the Blount County Sheriff’s Office at 865-273-5001 or the anonymous hotline at 865-273-5200.

JUST ANNOUNCED: Human remains discovered in Blount County in 1981 have now been identified through a collaborative effort between the Blount County Sheriff's Office, the University of Tennessee Forensic Anthropology Center, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Unidentified Human Remains Initiative.
