I recently had the incredible opportunity to attend the Indigenous Bar Association in Canada (IBA) Conference in Vancouver alongside my executive team from the Indigenous Law Students’ Association (ILSA) at the University of Alberta. Thank you to the University of Alberta, Faculty of Law for supporting us in attending. I’m so grateful to our school for making this experience possible.
Throughout the conference, I learned so much and connected with so many inspiring Indigenous leaders and legal professionals. A major highlight was meeting one of my biggest inspirations, the Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, and connecting with Gavin Cazon-Wilkes from Dehcho First Nations, the same Nation I’m from! Gavin, a U of A Law alumnus and current in-house legal counsel for Dehcho First Nations, shared invaluable insights that left me feeling both proud and motivated.
To top it all off, I was honoured to be elected as Vice President First Nations with the National Indigenous Law Students Association (NILSA) during the conference, alongside my classmate John Lodge, who was elected as VP Finance. I’m excited to bring University of Alberta representation to NILSA and to contribute to the important work ahead in supporting Indigenous law students across the country.
I left Vancouver feeling inspired, grounded, and hopeful for the future of Indigenous representation in law. 🪶
Mahsi Cho!
