My heart is with all of the families and communities across the NWT who are being affected by the forest fires.
Please know that I am keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. Times like this remind us of the strength and resilience we carry as Dene people, and how important it is to stand together. 🧡 Stay safe everyone.

The entire community of Fort Providence has been ordered to evacuate due to wildfires burning in the Northwest Territories of Canada. The community of roughly 700 people got the order this morning at 8:57 AM, and are to relocate to Hay River.

The fire ran 11km overnight and is now 2km from the community. Crews have been unable to attack the fire directly due to activity and aircraft have not been able to drop directly on the fire due to visibility. Structure protection measures are underway.

Celebrating Our Healing Dene Drum Dance

This morning I woke up with a full heart after attending a Dene drum dance last night. It was so uplifting to be in a space with so many people from various communities and walks of life. The connection we all shared was felt in that room, and I am so happy to have been apart of it. Seeing my relatives, listening to stories, meeting Elders, and dancing to the drums was definitely what I needed. Thank you to the MC for allowing Mya (Miss Dene Tha' - Mya McDowell) and I to share a few words about ourselves on stage.

i would say this was something that was very much out of my comfort zone. however, it was probably the best thing i could have walked out of my comfort zone for. the immediate warmth and welcoming energy i sensed from the committee and other contestants was felt the moment i stepped into the room. the profound love everyone showed throughout this event was something beautiful. we came from all walks of life, and all parts of the country yet we found ourselves together in that moment, i think that is pretty special. thank you to the sponsors as well who helped make this happen. 🤍

another beautiful thing is the amount of support i have recieved from the moment i found out i was selected as a contestant to now. from all my communities and family starting in british colombia, up north to NWT, and all the way down east to Newfoundland, it brings me immense happiness that you all were genuinely excited for me to go on this journey. and a journey it was!!! i learned so much and gained new experiences that i never thought i would get the chance to have. i will be forever grateful to those who supported me financially, with love, and with your kind donations.

also thank you to all my family especially my mom, dad and brothers for being there every step of the way. to my partner, kolby, and his parents, amber and kevin, i appreciate all the love you show me! thank you marsha and mir for always being a phone call away to ease my nerves and being the greatest of friends to me. my grandma, papa, nanny, and my late poppy, i hope to make each of you proud everyday. my heart. ❤️❤️

congratulations, Jess, i am excited to see all that you accomplish! i am glad to have been there to witness you becoming the first ever miss indigenous canada.

Day 2 🤍

Ended the day with a lovely welcome dinner!! First off, I just wanted to say mahsi to 49 Dzine Edmonton for creating and donating my dress that made me feel so beautiful. Second, mahsi to Sunlight and Sage for making my cute strawberry earrings that went perfect with my dress! 🍓

This experience has been filled with love and happiness, I am honoured to share a space with all these beautiful Indigenous women. I have already learned so much, and I am looking forward to learning more!
