How am I preparing for the Miss Indigenous Canada Pageant?

The big day is finally here, and I couldn’t have made it to this moment without the encouragement and generosity of those around me.

Throughout the month of May, Miss Indigenous Canada contestants were invited to reflect on what culture means to each of us.

For me, culture has always been tied to community and growing up in Buffalo Lake Metis Settlement gave me a deep sense of pride in who I am and where I come from. I grew up surrounded by family, culture, community events, and stories that grounded us in our roots. I learned to jig as a kid, made crafts in school from local knowledge keepers, and felt the kind of support only a strong community can give.

Being Metis, and being from one of the only eight Metis Settlements in Canada, is something I carry with me every day. It’s not just history, it’s living, breathing identity.

Culture, to me, is love, land, and leadership and I see all of that in my community.
