Seven referendum signs were vandalized with spray paint across Fort McMurray ahead of the upcoming vote.

The damaged signs were spread across five locations: Thickwood Boulevard, Confederation Drive, Hospital Street, MacKenzie Boulevard and Highway 63.

Of the 11 signs installed around the community, seven were damaged. All have since been repaired.

Ola Dada grew up in Fort McMurray before taking his comedy to stages across Canada and the U.S. 🎤✨

The Nigerian-born comedian went on to become a semifinalist on Canada’s Got Talent, runner-up in the SiriusXM Top Comic Competition and second-place finisher in the Seattle International Comedy Competition. 🏆

He has also performed with Just For Laughs, appeared on CBC’s The Debaters, released multiple comedy specials and albums, and hosted the Comedy Album of the Year category at the 2025 JUNO Awards.

Dada says the lessons he learned growing up here still carry into his work today.

“Growing up in Fort McMurray taught me that the weather was never an excuse not to work hard. It taught me resilience, and that’s exactly what you need for stand-up comedy. Every night, every crowd, every stage, you clock in. Regardless of the temperature in the room, it’s my job to keep it warm, or to warm it up.”

Dada will return to Fort McMurray on October 28, bringing his Alberta Boy? show to Rivers Casino & Entertainment Centre and performing once again in the community where he grew up. 🎭

“It’s just really nice being home.” 🥹❤️

It’s another example of local roots leading to opportunities well beyond the region.

Five people are facing charges after Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a reported copper wire theft north of Fort McMurray.

RCMP says officers were called around 4:34 a.m. on Oct. 1 to the Syncrude “Giants of Mining” exhibit on Highway 63. A black GMC truck reportedly left the area before police arrived.

The vehicle was later located south of Fort McMurray and five people were arrested.

Police say approximately $15,000 worth of stolen copper wire was recovered, along with suspected co***ne and methamphetamine, a TASER and bear spray. The truck had also been reported stolen and its VIN had allegedly been altered.

Those charged are Jimmy Hulley, 42, of Calgary; Michaela Felice, 25, of Rocky View County; Travis Birch, 46, of Rocky View County; Jaclyn Bateman, 35, of Calgary; and Thomas Lemon, 45, of Calgary.

They are facing a range of property, weapons and drug-related charges, along with additional offences for some of the accused.

Some have been released with upcoming court dates, while others remain in custody.

After the challenges of last winter, RMWB is making several changes aimed at improving snow clearing and removal across Fort McMurray this season. ❄️🚗

Parking fines during winter maintenance will rise from $120 to $400, or $240 if paid within seven days. RMWB said the higher fine will help offset towing costs, and there will no longer be an impound fee.

Vehicles blocking winter maintenance operations may instead be towed to the nearest lawful location, helping reduce towing time and delays for snow-clearing crews.

A new progress map will also show which streets have been cleared or delayed, while an Extreme Weather Response Plan could temporarily adjust regular schedules and parking restrictions during severe conditions.

Under normal conditions, the Municipality is targeting two weeks for snow plowing and four weeks for snow removal.

A Fort McMurray resident lost an estimated $120,000 after their bank account was compromised.

Wood Buffalo RCMP say the investigation later uncovered more victims in St. Albert and Calgary.

Divianshu, 22, of Calgary, and Pasquale Zanella, 63, of Île Bizard, Quebec, are facing 56 charges combined. Arrest warrants have been issued for both, and neither has been located.

There are more signs that Fort McMurray is getting busier again.

CBC News recently highlighted stronger housing demand, heavier construction workloads and more local hiring. Housing demand was reportedly up about 30% this summer, while some construction crews have seen their workload triple and are even turning jobs away. 📈

Businesses are hiring too, with one local dealership adding another 30 employees.

There’s also more attention on the oil sands, with the proposed West Coast oil pipeline now listed as a project of national interest.

Nobody is calling it a full boom just yet, but the signs are getting harder to miss.
