1991 clip from ATV's Wonder Why with host Richard Zurawski. Episode: "Plastics"
I have had a few requests for clips from this show over the years, so I figured it deserved a better post. Back then, Richard Zurawski was already a familiar face across the Maritimes as ATV's meteorologist, and his natural charm made him a perfect fit to host an educational children's series like this.
Wonder Why was one of the few Nova Scotia produced programs to break out beyond the region, eventually airing on CTV stations across Canada. Each episode took something from everyday life and explored the science behind how it worked or how it came to be.
The series originally aired from 1990 until around 1994, then returned in reruns later in the decade before quietly fading away. As of now, it has never surfaced on any streaming service and despite how popular it once was, much of the series feels almost lost today.
What makes it especially interesting looking back is how well it has aged. The show focused on real science and practical curiosity rather than trends or opinions of the moment, which gives it a timeless quality now. In a lot of ways, Wonder Why feels ahead of its time and probably helped open the door for other educational programming in the 90s like Acorn the Nature Nut.
