I’m so happy to announce that this is album is now available! Finished before the pandemic but the release was postponed due to lots of reasons.

Nothing can replace true human ears/caring/mindfulness when it comes to mastering audio BUT if you want to give your mix something to get it in the ballpark in the interim, here’s some great plugs to check out. My personal go-to when mixing is the first choice here: bx_masterdesk. Giving your mix some juice is as easy as turning up the volume k**b, but it does much more if you need it. Very simple controls on one single plug-in.

Had a fantastic time in Paris full day grilling Bob Clearmountain with mixing questions. Much of the focus was around Dolby Atmos mixing and he made it look easy. He has been mixing in 5.1 for a few decades so his transition to the format has been very natural. This was uplifting, as many people in the field are jumping into immersive audio (Atmos etc) uninitiated. We agreed that the immersive space right now is like the Wild West. Snake oil abounds !
Bob is always in demand to recreate early classics for Dolby Atmos. Part of his process has been assisted in AI by the team used to extract sound for the movie Get Back. The results are seriously amazing.
One example he showed was a remix of The Band’s 1969 hit “The Weight”. This was originally recorded on 8 tracks and the AI extraction was out of this world; drums were split from a single track into 4 tracks. Some vocals and piano were split apart from a single track. Levon’s lead vocals had the original reverb but no drum bleed!
The results of these such mixes parsed out into 11.1 sound (once the tracks are separated) are telling: the mix can suddenly breathe, and it is like you are sitting in the room with the group.
I’m sold on the Dolby Atmos mixing idea. Though the studios and engineers will have to up their game to effectively mix like this, consumers are actually buying in at an accelerated pace as gaming headphones and many soundbars and home amplifiers already have the technology to process and decode immersive mixes.
Bob recorded and mixed the recent live broadcast of Taylor Hawkins’ tribute show and we listened in Atmos along with the video. Emotions were strong in the room when Taylor’s son Shane played drums VERY convincingly on “My Hero”. I was holding back the tears for sure.
