| DAY ONE ✅ — Yellowhead Ag Society Ranch Rodeo 🤠

Warm, sunny, and an event that ran beautifully start to finish — kudos to Jenna Helmer and the rest of the AG Society team & volunteers.

My only complaint? Not a cloud in the sky 😅 Which sounds unhinged to everyone except other videographers & photographers, who are giggling and nodding in agreement right now (if you know, you know).

THE MINUTE BEFORE THE HORN

Everybody photographs the race.

The wagons coming out of the barrels, the dust, the outriders swinging up mid-stride, that whole beautiful mess of noise and speed. It's the shot. It's what the Rangeland Derby is famous for, and there's a reason every camera at Stampede Park is pointed at that turn.

But the frame I keep coming back to from my first Calgary Stampede isn't the race at all.

It's this one. An outrider loading the barrel, one hand up on the reins, head down, waiting. Dusk light coming in soft behind the wagon. The ground still wet. Everything about it is quiet.

There's maybe 20 seconds in there — after the teams are hooked and before the horn — where the whole thing sits completely still. Horses know. You can feel it in them, that wound-up readiness where nothing's moving yet but everything's about to.

And then it goes, and for the next minute and a half it's absolute chaos.

I think that's why I like the before. It's the part that's all preparation and nerves and muscle memory — no crowd noise, no announcer. Just people who've done this their whole lives getting ready to do it again.

Funny how the moment that stuck with me was the smallest one.

Confession time: I've only been filming rodeo a couple of years, and I've only lived in Alberta for three. So this past July was my very first Calgary Stampede. 🤠

I know. A rodeo videographer, along with many other sports/events now, who'd never been to the Stampede. I've been quietly hoping nobody would do the math on that one 😂

Here's the other thing — I'm really NOT a crowd person. Put me on a ski hill, the hockey rink, a trail, the bush, a court, or anything else alike; I'm the happiest woman alive. Put me in a crowd of a million people and I start looking for the exits. Luckily, a camera in my hands is more or less my safety blanket. Give me something to point it at and suddenly I'm fine. It's a very convenient coping mechanism and I'd recommend it to anyone 🙃

And then there's the part I'm almost embarrassed to admit: I never actually made it to the rodeo. Two days at the stampede and I was too excited to see all the other evnets. Turns out you can't see 200 acres of anything in 48 hours, no matter how fast you walk or how many times you tell yourself "just one more building."

But I saw just about everything else — and the chuckwagons were what got me.

I'd never been up close to wagon racing before. You watch it on TV and you understand it's fast. You do not get it until you're standing near enough to feel it come past you.

Grabbed a few frames I'm proud of — this one's my favourite so far.
