You could fill an ocean with what I don’t know! 🌊

As leaders in a family business, it is so easy to fall into the trap of feeling like we need to have all the answers. But is there a risk in feeling like you know it all? Absolutely.

The moment we decide we’ve learned enough, we get stuck. We accidentally close ourselves off to new ideas and collaboration from our team.

I love reminding myself that I will never know everything—and that is a beautiful thing! It gives us the opportunity to stay curious, remain open, and build solutions alongside the people we work with.

Give yourself permission to not know everything today! ✨

Have you ever tried the Brené Brown 50% rule with your spouse or business partner? 💡

In our latest podcast episode, we talk about the incredible power of a simple capacity check-in. You and your spouse give yourselves a score out of 100 based on your energy and emotional capacity for the day. (e.g., “I’m at an 80 today!” or “I’m only at a 20.”)

If one of you is low, the other can step up. But the golden rule is this: If your combined score is less than 50, you need to sit down and make a plan so you don’t accidentally hurt each other.

When we communicate that we are underwater, we give our partners the chance to support us instead of fighting with us. Give it a try this week! 🚜

Are you assuming your spouse knows exactly how overwhelmed you are right now?

It is the easiest trap to fall into! In Episode 8, Amanda shares a brilliant “aha” moment about balancing her demanding off-farm job with the family dairy. She was getting frustrated that her husband didn’t realize how swamped she was, until she finally sat him down and said: “Right now, my job is like spring seeding. I need you to step up for me, just like I step up for you during your busy season.”

We cannot expect our partners to read our minds! Tell them what season you are in, ask for exactly what you need, and tackle the busy times as a team. 🤝✨

Do you “own” your own kitchen table? 🏡

When Amanda and her husband started farming with his family, she knew right away that they needed a space that was entirely their own. Living inside the farm corporation works for many families, but it can quickly create friction when you feel like you have to ask the shareholders for permission to change your own kitchen cupboards!

Whether you buy your own house or live in a corporate-owned home, the secret to success is setting clear, articulated guidelines. Knowing where the business ends and your autonomy begins relieves so much unnecessary tension.

Have you set these guidelines with your family? 💛

You are probably much closer to a solution than you think. 🤝

When we get stuck in our own ways of thinking, disagreement feels like an obstacle. But every disagreement is actually a choice between two paths: conflict or learning.

Pick a better path today with this quick phrase: 💡

“Good! You see it differently. Help me see what you see.”

It’s amazing how fast friction melts away when people feel genuinely heard. There is almost always a place in the middle when we make space for understanding! ✨

“I wish I’d have known how important a strong business management and planning tool was...” 💡

In agriculture, we love to focus on production. How do we grow a better canola crop? How do we put more weight on the calves? We love running the equipment and getting our hands dirty!

But as Mike Benoit honestly shares in Episode 7, learning how to grow the crop actually isn’t the hardest part. The real challenge—and the thing that saves you when the weather or markets turn against you—is having strong business and financial management tools.

When you have the right planning tools in place, you stop panicking when a crisis hits. You just open your toolbox and work through it! 🛠️

Ready to build a stronger business toolbox? Listen to Episode 7 today!

What actually charges your batteries? 🔋

In the family business world, we are so focused on keeping the operation running smoothly that we often forget to maintain ourselves. We ignore our own “check engine” lights and push through until we are running on fumes.

But true leadership requires presence, and you can’t be present when you are out of gas!

Take a moment today to think about what consistently fuels you. Is it time away from work? A great meal? An afternoon with friends and family?

Whatever it is, put it on your calendar this week. Treat your downtime like a vital business appointment, because it is! Have a wonderful day!

Are you holding your cards too close to your chest? 🤫

In family businesses, we often see two dangerous extremes during a tough season:

* The Successors hide their struggles to “prove” they can stand on their own two feet.

* The Founders hide the financial reality to “protect” the kids from stress.

But as Patti reminds us in Episode 7, keeping secrets only fuels the scary, false stories we make up in our heads!

Bringing everybody to the table is one of the most powerful things you can do for your family business. It builds trust, levels the playing field, and allows you to pull in the exact same direction. Be brave enough to share the whole picture! 💛
