Sometimes the challenge is half the fun. 🎣

After catching a few panfish with my son, I decided to give myself a mission: catch a rock bass on the kids’ Zebco Fishing with a micro popper.

A few casts, the right cadence, and BOOM—topwater rock bass. 💥

Good tackle absolutely makes a difference, but even the best lure won’t catch fish by itself. Knowing where the fish are, how they’re positioned, and how to work the bait is what turns a cast into a strike.

Turns out you don’t always need the most expensive setup. The kids’ Zebco Fishing rod, a tiny popper, and a little know-how will get it done. 😎🎣

There’s always a reason 🎣

Behind every lake, river, or stretch of shoreline I fish, there’s something that drew me there—a new species, beautiful scenery, or simply the possibility of a story worth remembering.

Fishing has taken me to places I may never have explored otherwise. Some trips end with a personal best, some with a lesson, and others with a reason to return.

Grateful for every fish, friendship, and adventure along the way—and I hope this page inspires you to explore new waters and see where the next cast takes you. 🌊

Some trips test your patience more than your tackle.

I drove 200 kilometres to the Trent River with one goal: put a walleye and a river smallmouth in the net. After recently finding success with lake smallies, I figured it was time to take the hunt to moving water.

The trip started with a surprise. First cast, first fish—a personal best rock bass. It felt like a sign of things to come.

It wasn’t.

For the next three days, the river humbled me. Paddletails, inline spinners, chatterbaits, Ned rigs, Texas rigs, wacky rigs—I threw just about everything in the tackle box. Shore, dock, rain, clouds, even dodging thunderstorms that sent me packing early. The fish simply refused to play.

On my final morning, with only a couple of hours before the drive home, the clouds finally broke. The sun peeked through, and I made one last stop for a tub of nightcrawlers.

Sometimes the old ways still win.

A nightcrawler pinned to a 1/16-ounce jighead beneath a bobber drifted naturally through a slow seam. On the first drift, the float disappeared.

Then it happened again.

And again.

In thirty minutes, I landed four smallmouth, finally slipping one into the net for the photo I’d been chasing all weekend.

The drive home reminded me of something every angler eventually learns: fancy lures have their day, but there are times when the fish make the decision for you.

Some days, you just need the nightcrawlers. 🎣

This football slammed the Xzones stealth craw on a Texas rig! A great presentation for pressured fish on rocky bottoms. Let it drop to the bottom and then slowly reel it back with a few pops and dragging it on the lake floor from time to time.

A year ago, I searched the Thames for smallmouth and came up empty. This year, I came prepared.

The night before, I texas-rigged the X Zone Lures Stealth Craw, hoping it’d be the difference-maker. Turns out, it was!

At first light, we launched the kayaks, found rocky bottom, and it didn’t take long before the line tightened.

Three footballs later, including one that bent the rod halfway, pulled the kayak around, and launched skyward before crashing back into the lake, I finally slipped my first smallie into the net.

My first bronzeback is officially off the list—and definitely not my last. 🎣

Sometimes the simplest setup is all you need.

Cruising the kayak, hunting for structure, and putting together a solid bluegill bite. The key was finding the right water and slowing down enough to let the fish tell the story.

A big part of the puzzle was using FishAngler to locate underwater structure and holding areas before ever making a cast. Once the fish were found, the action followed.

And as always, staying comfortable on the water thanks to the UV protection gear from Cast Threads. ☀️

Bluegills, calm water, and a kayak loaded with memories. That’s a day well spent.

For months, bass opener sat circled on the calendar. Tackle boxes were organized, rods were rigged, and anglers across the province counted down the days.

When the morning finally arrived, I loaded the kayak and hit the water with one thing on my mind: bass.

No distractions. No chasing panfish. Just a stick bait and a grass line that looked too good to pass up.

The cast landed tight to the edge. A slow retrieve. A twitch. Another pause.

Then the line jumped.

Moments later, I was hauling in my first bass of the season—and what felt like half a pound of grass along with it. After months of anticipation, it is the only fish that mattered.

Bass opener is finally here.
