We saved $5000 by DIYing our heated floor π
We wanted a hydronic floor heating system that was low profile and configured for our unique layout and quickly realized that doing it ourselves would meet these criteria and also save us over $5000 compared to purchasing a premade option π€
Hereβs a more detailed description of how we did it:
- Cut and glued strips of closed cell foam into the grooves using CA glue
- Cut XPS foam board to 0.80β thick and glued it to the metal ribs of the van using PL Premium
- Fill gaps and perimeter with spray foam and trim flush once dry
- Router grooves into the foam to recess the 1/2β pex A
- Place aluminum omega heat transfer plates in the grooves and apply a bead of silicone to increase heat transfer and reduce risk of noise from pex expanding/contracting
- Glue down our 3/8β Baltic birch subfloor using PL Premium and weighed it down to set overnight
Totally floor height is 1 1/8β and we have nearly 100β of 1/2β Pex A for plenty of heating power in the gycol loop!
