📢*FEATURED INVASIVE PLANT*

Be on the lookout for invasive Norway maple (Acer platanoides). Native to Europe and western Asia, it was first introduced to the United States for cultivation as an ornamental tree in 1756. It has many competitive advantages over native maple and other tree species, including shade tolerance, prolific seed production, and ability to establish in a variety of soil types. In recent years, awareness of its invasive potential has increased, and many municipalities and some nurseries no longer plant or sell Norway maple or some of its cultivars. However, there are several Norway maple cultivars still widely sold in nurseries due to their attractive appearance, urban tolerance, ease of production, low maintenance and relatively low cost

Here is how identify this invasive plant:
🌿Stems: Grows up to 22 m tall. It has dark grey bark with shallow intersecting ridges. Its twigs are stout and smooth. The terminal bud is blunt, reddish-purple with 3-4 pairs of fleshy scales.

🌿Leaves: It leaves are opposite and palmately lobed. They have 5-7 lobes that are sharply pointed. Petioles exude a white, milky sap.

🌿Flowers: Its flowers are small, yellow-green. They are erect and occur in terminal clusters. The flowers measure 10mm across and have 5 petals and 5 sepals.

🌿Fruits: Winged maple keys. They are spread at an almost 180 degree angle. Each key measures 3.5-5.5 cm long.
