18 Tips to Grow Snake Plants That Are Taller, Fuller & Healthier

1. Give them bright, indirect light β€” This encourages strong, upright growth.
2. Provide a little morning sun β€” A few hours of gentle sunlight can boost growth.
3. Rotate the pot regularly β€” Turn it every few weeks for even growth.
4. Use a well-draining soil mix β€” Choose a cactus/succulent mix or add perlite to regular potting soil.
5. Always use a pot with drainage holes β€” Snake plants hate sitting in water.
6. Water only when the soil is completely dry β€” Overwatering is one of the biggest causes of problems.
7. Water deeply, then let excess drain away β€” Avoid giving frequent tiny amounts of water.
8. Reduce watering in cooler months β€” The plant uses less water when growth slows.
9. Keep leaves dust-free β€” Gently wipe the leaves so they can make the most of available light.
10. Feed during active growth β€” Use a balanced, diluted houseplant fertilizer occasionally in spring and summer.
11. Don’t overfertilize β€” Too much fertilizer can damage roots and cause weak growth.
12. Give roots enough room β€” Repot when the plant becomes seriously root-bound, but avoid oversized pots.
13. Use a heavy pot for tall varieties β€” It helps prevent top-heavy plants from tipping over.
14. Keep the plant warm β€” Protect it from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
15. Give leaves enough space β€” Avoid cramming multiple plants against walls or other plants.
16. Remove damaged or rotten leaves β€” Cut unhealthy leaves cleanly at the base with a sterile tool.
17. Propagate healthy pups β€” New shoots growing from the soil can eventually create a fuller-looking plant.
18. Be patient β€” Snake plants are naturally slow growers. Consistent light, proper watering, and healthy roots will produce the best results over time.

Golden rule: When in doubt, let the soil dry out rather than watering too often. For snake plants, overwatering is usually a bigger problem than underwatering.
