Arriving at Baie Du Doré after a 3 hour ride along the Bruce County Rail Trail at a consistent speed of 50km/h is an excellent experience, and a journey that I’ve completed several times throughout the summer. Starting from the Mildmay Wilderness Park staging area, it’s a breeze to navigate a relatively straight and smooth trail that passes by Walkerton, Paisley, Port Elgin, and Brucedale Conservation Area before ultimately reaching a scenic lookout point suitable for a lunch break.

Standing by the water while enjoying the cool breeze and letting my machine cool down has become a familiar ritual at what I would consider the halfway point of my route. Other than the occasional dog walking pedestrian, there aren’t typically a lot of other visitors around, which makes this a peaceful spot to enjoy a scenic view before heading back home.

My first group ride with PTBO TRAILS ATV Club was a success. I was thrilled to meet so many people that share my passion for the hobby and see so many cool off-road machines in action, including some very capable ATVs and Side by Sides. Our journey started at 9:00am and continued well into the evening as we rode a variety of rail trails, roads, forest trails, and some technical terrain leading to the entry of Merrill Lake’s beautiful beach, also know as Lil’ Cuba.

Finding the legendary spot that I’ve heard so much about from other ATV and SXS enthusiasts felt like an exciting milestone, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. While some members of our group indulged in a quick swim to cool off, others sat in the sand and enjoyed an extended lunch break. I took a moment to refuel and feel thankful that I had the foresight to bring along an extra jerry can, as there aren’t exactly a plethora of gas stations available in the wilderness.

I’ve been enjoying the occasional trip to Gopher Dunes to ride the three 10km forest trails the facility has to offer. Although known primarily for the motocross track, there is lots of fun to be had for ATV and Side by Side owners for just a small admission fee.

I was having so much fun weaving through the trees and blasting around corners that I forgot to turn on my action camera to share some POV footage with you, which just gives me an excuse for another visit in the near future.

I’m so impressed by how well the trails are maintained and how much effort goes into giving every rider an exceptional experience. If you haven’t had a chance to check out Gopher Dunes, it’s worth stopping by for a few hours with a couple friends to chase through the forest.

Driving through the heart of Clifford, ON with my Maverick X3 loaded up and ready for a fun day of trail riding. I couldn’t help myself and decided to stop for a photo in front of Dell’s Diner, and some other notable businesses that make up the quaint and colourful background of Elora Street.

I’ll take this opportunity to mention that my 7’ x 14’ utility trailer from PJ Trailers Ontario Inc. has been performing impressively well and has proven to be the perfect way to transport my side by side. At this price point, there truly isn’t a better option on the market that delivers as much value as this model does, and I happen to think it’s pretty stylish too.

Splashing through the mud at Minden Off-Road Park with a couple ATVs, Side by Sides, and good friends. We’re still reminiscing about an incredible weekend of tough terrain, capable machines, and all the mud we could handle.

Completing Miserable Lake Loop (HATVA T3.6) in one day with a total of 4 machines was quite the challenge, especially for those with less ground clearance and limited suspension travel. Thankfully, my Maverick X3 XRC 72” was rocksteady over some especially technical sections, and with my front sway bar disconnected, the articulation was excellent.

If you’re thinking about attempting this trail, I’d highly recommend it. Be sure to bring a spare tire, extra fuel, a winch and the appropriate recovery straps. A couple of capable machines riding in convoy with the ability to spot each other throughout the rougher sections would be ideal.

I made it to Sauble Beach just in time to watch the sunset over Lake Huron from the edge of the water. As soon as my tires touched the sand, I couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief, as this location had been on my radar since the beginning of the ride nearly 8 hours earlier. I’ve been so impressed by the reliability of my 2018 Can-Am Maverick X3 XRC Turbo R and, while perhaps running the risk of jinxing myself, I’d like to say this machine has been absolutely rock solid over 2000 kilometres of tough terrain.

Driving through the downtown core of one of Ontario’s most popular tourist attractions was a bit surreal and travelling by UTV over city streets made the experience even more unique, especially for someone still new to the novelty of this hobby. Fortunately, the XRC variant of Can-Am’s popular Maverick platform comes equipped with 30” Maxxis Liberty tires, which despite being designed with rock crawling in mind, seem to perform reasonably well on asphalt and sand.

I had a blast exploring the SBPATV trail system, starting from their parking lot on Rankin Bridge Road, which is spacious enough to accommodate approximately 10 trucks and trailers on a busy day. My ride covered a variety of terrain and included Boat Lake Trail, Willie’s Way, SBP Rail Trail, Georgian Rail Trail, and many dirt roads in between.

Over the span of a full day I travelled several hundred kilometres and barely scratched the surface of what this diverse trail system has to offer. Passing through the town of Sauble Beach toward the end of the day allowed me to stop and watch the sunset over Lake Huron before returning to the parking area to conclude my journey.

There are several gas stations available throughout the region which make convenient waypoints along a lengthy route, if you plan on passing through all trail sections mentioned above. Restaurants can be accessed in Sauble Beach, Wiarton, and Owen Sound if you aren’t shy about traversing the occasional asphalt surface in your off-road machine.
