The Government of Saskatchewan is funding 20 new second-stage sober living spaces in Lloydminster through a $225,000 annual investment in Oxford House recovery housing.

“We want to see Saskatchewan residents get the follow-up support they need after completing their addictions treatment,” mental health and addictions minister Lori Carr said in a release. “Post-treatment is a vital part of recovery and helps people prepare for a healthier, safer return to their communities.”

Sober living spaces support individuals continuing their recovery after completing initial treatment. Treatment focuses on preventing relapse through counselling and connection to community and culture.

Saskatchewan will impose a 50 per cent levy on American alcohol imports starting Sept. 8, retaliating against the United States tariff on Canadian alcohol that took effect Aug. 22.

The provincial government announced the measure Aug. 27, saying it is intended to send a clear signal that Saskatchewan will stand up for its industries and exporters while supporting efforts to restore fair trade between Canada and the U.S.

Finance Minister Jim Reiter said Saskatchewan prefers free trade but will act to protect local producers and exporters from U.S. tariffs.

The levy will apply to U.S.-origin alcohol imported into Saskatchewan through the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority online ordering system used by retailers. Any American-produced alcohol ordered by retailers as of Sept. 8 will be subject to the 50 per cent levy.

The measure affects consumers on both sides of the Border City, where liquor pricing is set by SLGA retail operations in both Alberta and Saskatchewan.

ore than 60 Lloydminster and area organizations have donation accounts set up at the Bea Fisher Bottle Depot, turning everyday recycling into community fundraising.

The list reads like a directory of Border City life: service clubs, churches, sports teams, schools, theatre groups and youth programs all benefit from residents bringing their bottles to the depot.

“Often, we will promote donation accounts and bottle drives as two things the bottle depot can do to help a wide range of organizations, clubs, teams, etc. raise money for their activities,” says Kim Crockett, marketing and business development co-ordinator at Bea Fisher.

The model works. In each of the past couple of years, these fundraising options have helped groups raise over $100,000, according to Crockett.

eHealth Saskatchewan is warning Border City residents about text messages and phone calls falsely claiming to be from the provincial health authority, demanding payment for health card renewals.

The scammers are telling recipients that Saskatchewan health cards are expired or require immediate replacement, according to a provincial release issued Aug. 27.

Recipients are asked to click a link to update their information and may be asked to pay a fee or provide personal information to maintain access to health care services, update their records or renew their health card.
