When I was in the Philippines, I thought living in Canada meant instant success.
One Canadian dollar is over 40 pesos—how could anyone here not be doing well?
Now that I’ve been here for almost 5 years, I know the truth.
Yes, we earn in dollars—but we spend in dollars too. Rent, food, bills, taxes—everything costs so much. Sometimes, I’m just trying to make it to the next paycheck.
It’s hard when family or friends ask for help and I have to say no. Not because I don’t care—but because sometimes, I simply can’t.
Life abroad isn’t always the dream—it’s often a daily fight to survive.
So if your loved one abroad can’t give, please don’t take it as a lack of love. They might already be giving everything they’ve got.
