I launched something today that I’m pretty proud of — and a little nervous about. 😄

CanadaGPT is a platform that lets anyone ask questions about Canadian federal politics and get real answers, backed by actual government data. Not opinions. Not someone’s interpretation. The actual Hansard transcript. The actual vote record. The actual lobbying registration.

I started building it after spending a frustrated afternoon trying to find out how much a single MP was spending — and realizing that what the government calls “transparency” is basically impossible to navigate without a spreadsheet addiction.
500,000+ parliamentary statements. 100,000+ lobbying meetings. 2 million+ political donation records. All connected. All searchable. In plain English (or French).

The AI is called Gordie. Ask him anything.

On another floor crossing day, the same claims are circulating again. That it is undemocratic. That it should trigger a byelection. That at minimum the MP should be barred from joining another caucus and forced to sit as an independent.

Before reacting, it is worth grounding ourselves in how our system actually works.

I wrote the piece below during the last wave of outrage. It explains why parties do not own seats, why MPs do not swear allegiance to platforms or leaders, and why floor crossing is not a constitutional glitch but a feature of Westminster design.

One additional point is worth underlining this time. Forcing a floor crosser to sit as an independent does not neutralize their influence. Independence means freedom from the party whip. It means maximum voting autonomy. If anything, joining another caucus subjects the member to a new set of constraints.

If we are going to argue about reform, we should at least start from a correct understanding of the structure we already have.

The original piece follows.

Why floor crossing, minority governments, and parliamentary weirdness are signs of a healthy system—not a broken one

If Alberta separatism fails on history, law, and treaty reality, the remaining question is not whether it could happen, it is who it would benefit if it did.

Carney Commits $1B Saved From Peace Board to Ensuring World Has Adequate Supply of Gorilla Glue, Blue Dream, and Emergency Gummies for Remaining 3.5 Years of Trump’s Second Term

“This is a measured, proportionate response,” says PM

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed Thursday that the $1 billion saved after Canada’s invitation to the Board of Peace was formally withdrawn will be redirected toward a global ma*****na stabilization effort, aimed at helping allied nations endure the remaining 3.5 years of Donald Trump’s second presidential term.

“Please let this announcement serve to represent that Canada has carefully considered the situation,” said Carney, speaking slowly and precisely. “And has concluded that the international community will require access to consistent, high-quality indica.”

Under the plan, Canada will establish a Strategic Cannabis Reserve featuring widely trusted strains such as Blue Dream for daytime functionality, Gorilla Glue for evenings when the news becomes unavoidable, and Northern Lights for leaders who have simply seen enough.

Government briefing notes confirm that edibles will play a central role, including low-dose gummies for diplomats, higher-dose gummies for trade negotiators, and “don’t talk to me” brownies reserved for emergency summits and surprise press conferences.

The government also announced a special outreach program for world leaders who, according to officials, are “using ma*****na during interactions with the Trump administration as a coping mechanism and performance-enhancing aid for the first time.”

The initiative will be headed by former Olympic snowboarder Ross Rebagliati, appointed Special Ambassador for First-Time International Cannabis Use.

“Many of these leaders are coming from countries where this is new,” said Rebagliati when reached for comment. “They have questions. They are nervous. They would like reassurance that yes, this is normal now, and that no, no one can tell if you just act normal and don’t do anything stupid.”

Carney acknowledged that the funding became available following receipt of a meticulously worded letter informing him that Canada would not, in fact, be joining what was described as “the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time.”

“We respect the decision,” Carney said. “And we thank the President of the United States of America for his attention to this matter.”

The Prime Minister added that Canada remains committed to peace, stability, and ensuring that no allied head of state has to raw-dog a 2 a.m. Truth Social post without assistance.

At press time, officials confirmed this release would be taken completely seriously by some readers.

In 1965 Mr. Alexander ran for Parliament, as a member of the Conservative party. He lost by the narrow margin of 2,250 votes in his riding of Hamilton West. On 25 June 1968 Mr. Alexander was elected, the first Black-Canadian to serve as a Member of Parliament. In June 1979 Prime Minister Joe Clark appointed Mr. Alexander as Minister of Labour, the first Black-Canadian to be a cabinet minister. Mr. Alexander resigned in May 1980 when a new opportunity arose to more directly serve the people of Ontario. Premier William Davis appointed him Chair of the Ontario Workers' Compensation Board, another first for a Black-Canadian. He served in this position for five years.

When that term ended, Mr Alexander had another first. On 20 September 1985, Lincoln Alexander was sworn in as the 24th Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario. He was the first Black person in Canada to hold a vice-regal position. In 1991 his term ended. Mr. Alexander then became the chancellor of the University of Guelph. He held the post for an unprecedented 15 years, until 2007. While in this position he was also named as the first chair of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation in 1996. It began operations in 1997.

A new milestone for Search and Rescue in Canada.

On January 8, 2026, the Royal Canadian Air Force’s CC-295 Kingfisher officially assumed fixed-wing search and rescue posture at 14 Wing Greenwood, marking a major step forward in modernizing Canada’s SAR capability.

That same day also marked the conclusion of CC-130H Hercules SAR operations at Greenwood after decades of dedicated service, signalling both progress and the beginning of a historic transition.
