The Mahabodhi Temple of Bodh Gaya A Sacred Cry for Justice from the Heart of the Buddhist World

Bodh Gaya—the sacred land where Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree and became the Buddha—is the holiest pilgrimage site for millions of Buddhists around the world. The Mahabodhi Mahavihara is not just a monument; it is the very heartbeat of global Buddhism.
Yet, tragically, this holiest of sites is not under the control of Buddhists. It remains in the hands of non-Buddhists, specifically a group of Brahmin priests, in a manner that is both historically unjust and morally indefensible.
A People Denied Their Sacred rights
Muslims control Mecca. Christians oversee the Vatican. Hindus manage their sacred temples.
So why is the holiest site of Buddhists in the hands of those who do not follow the Buddha’s path?
Worse still, the Buddha statue at the Mahabodhi temple is often misrepresented as being part of Hindu mythology, even falsely identified as the "five Pandavas." Rituals alien to the Buddha's teachings are being conducted in his sacred space, distorting his philosophy and disrespecting his legacy.
Every year, millions of dollars in donations from foreign Buddhist countries flow into Bodh Gaya. Yet that money is reportedly misappropriated and used not for the welfare of Buddhists, but for non-Buddhist interests. This is exploitation, not reverence.
A History of Usurpation.
The Mahabodhi Mahavihara was once restored and protected by Emperor Ashoka, whose symbol now ironically represents the Republic of India. However, in the 19th century, the site was gradually taken over and turned into a Hindu temple, complete with deities and non-Buddhist rituals.
Today, even during Buddha Purnima, the most sacred day in the Buddhist calendar, Hindu idols are being worshipped in front of the Buddha’s statue—an act that is not only culturally inappropriate but deeply offensive to Buddhists worldwide.
A Movement Ignored by the Media.
Since February 12, 2025, under the leadership of the All India Buddhist Forum (AIBF), Buddhist monks have been protesting peacefully through hunger strikes and sit-ins at Bodh Gaya. Their demand is simple and just:
Repeal the Bodh Gaya Temple Act of 1949 and return full control of the Mahabodhi Mahavihara to Buddhists.
Many monks have already been arrested. And yet, the national and mainstream media remain silent—controlled by the same Hindutva-influenced powers that resist Buddhist voices.
Where is the Global Buddhist Community?
Perhaps the most painful aspect of this struggle is the silence of the global Buddhist community. From Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan, Myanmar, Bhutan, China, and beyond—where are the voices of solidarity?
While followers of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar have bravely taken to the streets, fasting and fighting for justice, traditional Buddhist communities remain largely passive. Why?
This Is Not Just About a Temple—It’s About Survival
This is not a communal conflict. It is a fight for religious dignity and historical justice. Bodh Gaya is not merely a site—it is the spiritual home of every Buddhist. If we remain silent today, we risk losing not only our sacred places but our cultural heritage itself.
We demand:
Return the Mahabodhi Temple to its rightful custodians—the Buddhists.
End the centuries of appropriation and silence.
Unite, raise your voice, and stand against injustice.
Now is not the time for silence.
Now is the time to speak.
Now is the time to act.
