Quick schedule update for participants of ISSUE โ„–3: submit.hintology.org

In short: the announcement of the shortlist has been delayed to October 1st, at which point pre-order will be made available. We'll then have two weeks to make final revisions and send to print, so that we can hopefully start shipping in November.

The delays are mainly due to the much greater number of participants and a certain amount of clerical issues with the submissions. We apologize for the delays and will do our best to get back into schedule.

Thanks for your patience!

Join us on our second creative journey with this renewed invitation to submit your artworks and have them featured in the next 150+ pages issue of our magazine.

"[The topic of variation] emerges from a rich tradition across art forms: In music, Rachmaninoff composed โ€œVariations on a Theme of Paganiniโ€ and Bach his โ€œGoldberg Variations.โ€ In visual arts, Monet painted the Rouen Cathedral over thirty times, and his haystacks twenty-five times, portraying the same subject from different perspectives, in different lights and weathers.

Photography naturally lends itself to such variations, if simply because of the speed and ease of shifting the cameraโ€™s frame or exposure. Walker Evans, Imogen Cunningham, Michael Kenna and countless other photographers have experimented with making multiple images of the same subjects by varying their cameraโ€™s lens, focal length, exposures, and so on.

The spirit behind this tradition [...] echoes through the photographic journeys of the following six artists, who share their work [in this article] and reflect on how variations relate to their creative process."

๐ŸŽ‰ Five Years of Hintology
โ†ณ August 1st Anniversary

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

Five years ago, Hintology emerged from a simple question: what stories surface in abstract photography when we look beyond our own work? The magazine became a way to turn private curiosity into shared inquiry, creating space for conversations about the unspoken dimensions of abstract imagery.

The timing proved fortuitous. Those early pandemic years brought people together digitally, hungry for connection. Community felt essential. But as the world returns to separate rhythms, that collective energy starts to fragment. People drift back into isolation, often realizing too late what they're losing.

Hintology has been navigating this shift while evolving from casual curation into something more ambitious โ€” physical publications, sustained editorial vision... while remaining largely a solo work with occasional (and invaluable) collaborators, balancing intimate scale with expansive aspirations.

The testimonies that follow capture what happens when we create space for work that resists categorization. Photographers emerge with stories of breakthrough, of having been given a permission that should never require being granted: to merely speak their voice, often after having been told their vision did not fit expectations. They describe community built around genuine curiosity rather than algorithms, platforms celebrating subjective expression over prescribed aesthetics.

What moves us most is how abstract photography becomes more than aesthetic choice โ€” it transforms into healing practice, processing difficult experiences and connecting with forces larger than ourselves. We use abstraction not to escape reality, but to engage with it more deeply.

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

If you have your own testimony to share, drop it in the comments.
Thanks everyone for sticking with us on this journey!
