in 2022, the United States conducted an airstrike in Kabul that killed the co-founder and leader of al-Qa'ida, Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Zawahiri served as Usama bin Ladin’s deputy and planned the 1998 bombing of the US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya, the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen, and the 11 September 2001 attacks against the U.S. homeland. He was among the most wanted terrorists in the world. After years of persistent work by U.S. intelligence professionals, including many CIA officers, Zawahiri was killed in a strike targeting his safehouse in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Today celebrates National Intelligence Professionals Day—a day set aside by Congress to recognize the men and women of the Intelligence Community who undertake dangerous assignments and provide decisionmakers with insights to prevent attacks on America and our allies.

Whether serving at Headquarters in Langley or in some faraway land, thank you to all CIA officers who work in the shadows and readily accept that their greatest achievements and personal sacrifices for national security will likely never be known.
