📢''United Against Hate Canada is working with the Caribbean Council to broaden public knowledge of Emancipation Day. We hope ultimately to see Emancipation Day receive the same recognition and status as Juneteenth has in the United States. We feel that too little attention is paid to Emancipation Day and hope to work with other organizations over the course of the next year to change that. [...] We will in the coming year launch a project on Harriett Tubman and her connection to Canada. After escaping slavery, she resided for a decade in what is today Saint Catharines, Ontario. She had a deep connection with the Salem Chapel, one of Canada's first Black Churches with a history dating from the 1780s.'' - Marvin Rotrand, Director, United Against Hate Canada.

***August 1 is Emancipation Day commemorating the Slavery Abolition Act adopted by the British Parliament in 1833, which came into force August 1, 1834, gradually ending slavery in all British domains.****

Nous espérons que cette journée finira par bénéficier de la même reconnaissance et du même statut que le Juneteenth aux États-Unis. Nous estimons que la Journée de l'émancipation ne reçoit pas suffisamment d'attention et espérons collaborer avec d'autres organisations au cours de l'année à venir afin de changer cela. 🎉 Wendell Nii Laryea Adjetey est notre lauréat pour le mois de septembre 2025!

Wendell Nii Laryea Adjetey (Nii Laryea Osabu I, Atrékor Wé Oblahii kè Oblayéé Mantsè) est professeur adjoint et titulaire d’une chaire William Dawson, spécialiste de l’histoire des États-Unis après la Reconstruction et de la diaspora africaine à l’Université McGill. Il détient un doctorat, une maîtrise ès arts (MA) et un Master of Philosophy (MPhil) de Yale University. Il est également l’auteur de Cross-Border Cosmopolitans: The Making of a Pan-African North America (UNC Press, 2023). Cet ouvrage a reçu parmi les distinctions les plus prestigieuses décernées aux historiens aux États-Unis et au Canada, et a été unanimement salué pour sa portée et son analyse novatrice. Le Dr Adjetey a également été récompensé par trois prix consécutifs : le Prix d’histoire du Gouverneur général (2024), le Prix du recteur pour l’excellence en enseignement (2023) et le Prix d’excellence en enseignement H. Noël Fieldhouse (2022).

He earned his PhD, MA, and MPhil from Yale University and is the author of Cross-Border Cosmopolitans: The Making of a Pan-African North America (UNC Press, 2023). That book received some of the United States and Canada’s most prestigious awards in the historical profession and garnered unanimous praise for its scope and groundbreaking analysis. Dr. Adjetey is the recipient of the 2024 Governor General’s History Award and has also been a back-to-back recipient of two of McGill’s teaching commendations: the 2023 Principal’s Prize for Excellence in Teaching and 2022 H. Noel Fieldhouse Award for Distinguished Teaching.

🎉Désirée Rochat est notre lauréate pour le mois d'août 2025!

Désirée Rochat est une éducatrice communautaire, une historienne et une gardienne de la mémoire. Guidée par une approche qui établit des ponts entre la recherche historique, la préservation des archives communautaires et l’éducation, son travail vise à documenter et à transmettre les histoires de la communauté noire et de l’activisme culturel au Québec. Rochat est l’autrice de matériel pédagogique sur les communautés caribéennes de la province et a participé à plusieurs initiatives visant à préserver et à promouvoir les archives de la communauté noire. En 2023, elle coédite Statesman of the Piano: Jazz, Race, and History in the Life of Lou Hooper en collaboration avec Sean Mills et Eric Fillion. Ce livre est basé sur l’autobiographie inédite de Louis Hopper, un pianiste canadien actif au début du 20e siècle sur les scènes jazz de Détroit, Harlem et Montréal. Son dernier projet « Black lives in/and archives » vise à promouvoir les archives et les gardien.ne.s de la mémoire des communautés noires du Québec.

🎉Désirée Rochat is our laureate for the month of August 2025!

Désirée Rochat is a community educator, historian and memory keeper. Guided by an approach that bridges historical research, preservation of community archives and education, her work aims to document and transmit the histories of Black community and cultural activism in Quebec. Rochat is the author of educational materials on the province's Caribbean communities, and has participated in several initiatives to preserve and promote Black community archives. In 2023, she co-edited Statesman of the Piano: Jazz, Race, and History in the Life of Lou Hooper with Sean Mills and Eric Fillion. The book is based on the unpublished autobiography of Louis Hopper, a Canadian pianist active in the jazz scenes of Detroit, Harlem and Montreal in the early 20th century. His latest project, "Black lives in/and archives", aims to promote the archives and memory keepers of Quebec's black communities.
